Our Shelf Talker
R.J. Julia All-Time Staff FavoriteI love John Irving and this is one of his best: a complicated plot, quirky characters and lots of symbolism. Owen Meany is a character you won't forget: his dwarfish size and a strange voice. He accidentally kills his best friend's mother, an event that assures Owen he is destined to be a martyr. You will laugh, you will feel sadness, but you will be glad you read it.

Owen Meany, the only child of a New Hampshire granite quarrier, believes he is God' s instrument. He is.
This is John Irving' s most comic novel; yet Owen Meany is Mr. Irving' s most heartbreaking character.
