Animal Spirits: How Human Psychology Drives the Economy, and Why It Matters for Global Capitalism
By George Akerloff & Robert Shiller
Our Shelf Talker
Akerlof and Shiller defend behavioral macroeconomics and support John Keynes’s theory that there are non-economic drivers of our economy--the attitudes and ideas that influence our actions. We may be in a depression stage in our thinking which could become a self-fulfilling philosophy. This book is for the general reader and comes at just the right time.-Roxanne
House of Cards: A Tale of Hubris and Wretched Excess on Wall Street
By William D. Cohan
Written with the novelistic verve and insider knowledge that made The Last Tycoons a bestseller and a prize-winner, House of Cards is a chilling cautionary tale about greed, arrogance, and stupidity in the financial world, and the consequences for all of us.
In Fed We Trust: Ben Bernanke's War on the Great Panic
By David Wessel
Our Shelf Talker
This is one of the best books out there for people who are curious about the recent financial melt-down. Wessel addresses the incompetence and the hubris, that was not immediately apparent to the rest of us. Frustrating but important reading.- Roxanne
Linchpin
By Seth Godin
Our Shelf Talker
Are you indispensable at work? Should you do what you are told to do or should you be outrageous and get noticed? The author helps answer those questions in a very entertaining but thoughtful way. He describes how to play that role as being a “linchpin”. Linchpins are successful because they love what they do. Their enthusiasm is matched by hard work and that becomes contagious and they become indispensable! What I took away from this book is the idea that it is important to be joyful, in a real, fundamental way about the work we do. It was a very good reminder, especially in this environment.- Roxanne

Tyranny of Email
By John Freeman
Our Shelf Talker
John Freeman does a couple of things in the book. First he establishes the negative impact of email by using the example that by depriving ourselves of facial expressions when we communicate we are missing out on the human component. “Nothing, especially LOL can quite convey the sound of a friend’s laughter.” Then he’s quite practical about how to use email politely. This is a good resource for our tech times.Roxanne
