Every Little Thing contains a collection of some of her finest writing, as well as columns that many of her loyal readers have proclaimed as their favorites of her work. Her Sunday Reflections column - many installments of which appear in Every Little Thing - was singled out for the prestigious Wilbur Award by the Religion Communicators Council in both 2001 and 2003; and earned awards in 2005 and 2006 for Best Opinion Writing on Religion Award from the American Academy of Religion. She has won a Clarion Award for her writing on women, and her work has also won numerous top honors from the New England Associated Press News Executives. How They See Us: Meditations on America

By James Atlas

Our Shelf Talker

Americans can often have a myopic view of themselves and their place in the world; "How They See Us" really opens our eyes, for good and for bad. Extremely well done.

Negotiating with the Dead: A Writer on Writing

By Margaret Atwood

Our Shelf Talker

This group of essays has footnotes and a bibliography and is meant to have high seriousness, but it's easy to read. It's meant to ask the question, why do I write? She realizes that she is negotiating with a lot of dead writers representing the playing field in which she herself is writing. Ms. Atwood writes with such extraordinary understanding of the nature of writing, you can't take your eyes off the book. Anyone who wants to write should read this book.

I adore this. It's not about the best books, but the books that impacted America's thinking, history and behavior.

The People on Privilege Hill and Other Stories

By Jane Gardam

A new collection of stories from a writer at the height of her powers, a celebrated stylist admired for her caustic humor, freewheeling imagination, love of humanity and wicked powers of observation. This is a delightful grouping of stories, witty and wise, that includes the return of Sir Edward Feathers, "Old Filth" himself.

Too Much Happiness

By Alice Munro

Our Shelf Talker

Here is the author in her late 70's and she comes out with this incredible book. She's never awarded her heroines with happy endings and this is certainly the case in this collection of short stories. What is amazing is her ability to allow the reader to reside for a time inside her characters and their lives. Best short story writer ever.

Where the God of Love Hangs Out

By Amy Bloom

Our Shelf Talker

What I love most about Amy Bloom's writing is the compassion and insight with which she regards her characters - and the way in which she honors the complexity of their emotional lives, and refuses to judge - how refreshing! These beautifully crafted stories are alive with honest feeling and characters that are fully realized and captivating.

Wild Child

By T.C. Boyle

Our Shelf Talker

TC Boyle was recently at the store with his new book which is a collection of short stories. The main story, almost a novella, is about the boy from the 19th century who was retrieved from the forest. Boyle is an extremely satirical writer with such a strong sense of the absurd and in the story he makes you think about what is civilized and what is uncivilized. As a reader you just have to go with it. You can’t judge. You will be enlightened at the end of it.
