Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice
By Phillip M Hoose
Our Shelf Talker
The National Book Award winner for young literature, this book is the story of Claudette who decided not to give up her seat on a bus, before Rosa Parks. Civil rights people did not like her as an example of their movement because she was emotional, pregnant and wore cornrows. They much preferred Rosa Parks to be the "face" of their movement. Claudette subsequently disappeared and this is the story of what happened to her.- Roxanne
The Book Thief
By Markus Zusak
Our Shelf Talker
This is an incredible story with death as the narrator that will make you reconsider young adult books for people older than 18. I can’t tell you the number of book clubs that have used (and loved) this book for discussion.- Roxanne
Thirteen Reasons Why
By Jay Asher
Our Shelf Talker
This book is the story of Hannah, a teen who sends a recording of her story to the thirteen peers who she feels are the cause of her suicide. This book is shocking, eye-opening, jarring, and it proves how easy it is to judge an action as non-impactful, when really, it’s a matter of life or death to someone else.- Roxanne
