Butterfield 8
By John O'Hara
Our Shelf Talker
I recently had my students read this book and we all thought it was an amazing book. It's a little bit of a mystery but is mostly about character. Also, it's important to note that the book is entirely different from the movie version with Elizabeth Taylor. What O'Hara does in plain English is describe what happened in the 1930's when America was waking up after the depression. The scandalous behavior that he writes about is pretty shocking. My students couldn't believe that their great-grandparents acted like this in 1935! It certainly makes their "Jell-O shots" seem tame.
