The R.J. Julia Parenting Series presented by The Country School.
Pamela Druckerman’s runaway New York Times bestseller BRINGING UP BÉBÉ: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting shows American parents the secrets behind France’s amazingly well-behaved children. Now available in a deluxe paperback, this new edition features illustrations and includes BÉBÉ DAY BY DAY, Druckerman’s 100 French parenting tips and recipes for the whole family.
When Druckerman, an American journalist, had a baby in Paris, she didn’t aspire to become a “French parent.” But she noticed that French children slept through the night by two or three months old. They ate braised leeks. They played by themselves while their parents sipped coffee. And yet French kids were still boisterous, curious, and creative. Why? How?
With a notebook stashed in her diaper bag, Druckerman, the author of Lust in Translation and a former reporter for The Wall Street Journal, sets out to learn the secrets behind raising children who are good eaters, sound sleepers, well-behaved, and independent. While charting her own experiences raising three children in Paris, Druckerman interviews Parisian friends and neighbors as well French teachers and childcare experts. Druckerman discovers that French parents are extremely strict about some things, and strikingly permissive about others. The result is children who are just as boisterous, curious, and creative as Americans but far better behaved and more in command of themselves.
Though ultimately striking a happy medium between the French way and her own parenting preferences, Druckerman discovers that there is a wisdom to French parenting that can be transformative: children, including her own, are capable of feats of understanding and autonomy that she had never imagined.
Researched over three years and written in her warm, funny voice, BRINGING UP BÉBÉ is deeply wise, charmingly told, and already destined to become a classic resource for American parents.
