"My book buddies, Roxanne Coady of R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT, Dr. Rose Quiello, lecturer in English at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, and enthusiastic reader Sally Gessner join me in the studio every two weeks. Occasionally Lee Jacobis, author and former professor at the University of Connecticut, drops in as well.

We tell you about the books we've enjoyed recently, and listeners are invited to tell us about your favorite books on line. E-mail us at faithwnpr@aol.com. ROXANNE'S PICKS:

Conspiracy of Fools Conspiracy of Fools: A True Story
by Kurt Eichenwald

This is the latest - and most interesting - book on the Enron scandal. Written by a noted NY Times journalist in the 'Bob Woodward' style, this is a fascinating study in group behavior and how it works. The devastating financial disaster was engineered by two main players, but succeeded with the help of a host of others who got caught up in it because of self-interest, or simply not asking the right questions. At 700+ pages, this is not a quick read, but if you like business, non-fiction, and/or corporate crime, this is for you.
Diane Arbus Revelations Diane Arbus Revelations
by Doon Arbus

First is the brilliantly curated show of Diane Arbus' photographs currently at the Metropolitan Museum of Art - a must see if you have a chance. Particularly noteworthy in the show was her writings about the photographs, and these are also contained in the book, which reflects the curation of the show perfectly. The photographs are amazing, but her writings, taken from letters and essays, are simply extraordinary.
Little Children Little Children
by Tom Perrotta

A group of 30+ women are surprised to find themselves 'stay-at-home' moms and want to make life a bit more interesting. A perfect little domestic novel!
The New First Dictionary of Cultural Literacy The New First Dictionary of Cultural Literacy: What Your Child Needs to Know
by E. D. Hirsch and William G. Rowland

This is between a dictionary and an encyclopedia and a great resource for elementary school children - giving the essential information on a broad range of topics.
My Life in the Middle Ages My Life in the Middle Ages: A Survivor's Tale
by James Atlas

A fabulous collection of essays about coming to grips with (and surviving) your middle years -- those decades of the forties and fifties.

SALLY'S PICKS:
Million Dollar Baby Million Dollar Baby: Stories from the Corner
by F. X. Toole

This is the source material for Eastwood's award-winning movie. A collection of six fight stories by a former fighter and cut man, Jerry Boyd, these give an incredible, insider's look at boxing, raw, gritty, and remarkable. He is a great storyteller with vivid characters. Also includes the novella, Rope Burns.
Dreams from My Father City Walks: New York: 50 Adventures on Foot
by Martha Fay

A terrific collection of cards, detailing 50 walking adventures in the city. Each card has a map on one side, and information on the other, detailing a self-guided tour, complete with history and insider's hints on places to see, eat, drink, rest, and play.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
by Mark Haddon

One of the best books! This is a bit of a mystery, told by Christopher, a 15-year old autistic boy, who, following Sherlock Holme's lead, investigates the murder of his neighbor's poodle. Touching but not sentimental, this is a captivating story told in an unusual and remarkable voice.
The Death of a Joyce Scholar The Death of a Joyce Scholar: A Peter McGarr Mystery
by Bartholomew Gill

I've discovered a clever, new literary mystery series - this by an Irish writer - revolving around Chief Superintendent Peter McGarr. Definitely recommended.

LEE'S PICKS:
The Magic Mountain The Magic Mountain
by Thomas Mann, translated by John E. Woods

Set in the days before World War I, this is the story of Hans Castorp, who comes to visit a tuberculosis sanatorium in the Swiss Alps and ends up staying 7 years. It is a novel of education, as three others fight for the philosophy of Han's soul. The enigmatic ending does not tell you who wins his allegiance, but leaves you wondering which you would choose.
The Plot Against America The Plot Against America
by Philip Roth

An intense tale by one of the country's foremost writers. This is an 'alternate' history, imagining what might have happened if Charles Lindbergh, an isolationist and anti-Semite, had won the presidency after FDR's second term. Interesting to compare to Moseley's highly-readable biography of Lindbergh.
Lindbergh Lindbergh: A Biography
by Leonard Mosley

The Princes of Ireland The Princes of Ireland: The Dublin Saga
by Edward Rutherfurd

Rutherfurd, a terrific writer, has taken early Irish history, for pre-Celtic days up to Henry VIII, and made it absolutely captivating. From the Celts to the Vikings to the Normans to the English - a sweeping, romantic saga.
The Lost In the Moon of Red Ponies: A Billy Bob Holland Novel
by James Lee Burke

A Billy Bob Holland mystery, set in the Bitterroot mountains of Montana, and involving a ecoterrorist plot to drill for oil on Indian lands. Simply masterful writing.

FAITH'S PICKS:
The Year of Pleasures The Year of Pleasures
by Elizabeth Berg

I am madly in love with this book - despite its subject! The story of a grieving widow, who moves from Boston to an unknown town in the Midwest to start a new life. This is fabulous, a book to get immersed in, full of gems of insight.
In the Fold In the Fold: Life's Most Essential Folding Techniques
by D. J. Robinson

A fun little book with instructions on how to fold anything and everything - including the clothes that you are going to give to Goodwill!
Fat Girl Fat Girl: A True Story
by Judith Moore

Just out in paperback to rave reviews. This is a study of what it is like to grow up fat, and be fat, in today's weight-obsessed culture.

50 years of men's basketball at the University of Connecticut.

by Carol Berkin

The stories of the frequently unknown women involved in America's struggle for independence.
The Last Undiscovered Place The Last Undiscovered Place
by David K. Leff

A wonderful study of Collinsville, CT and what makes small town life so valuable.

AND RECOMMENDED BY OUR LISTENERS:
Pearl Pearl
by Mary Gordon

Also recommended earlier by Rose.
Smudge Bunny Smudge Bunny

A charming children's book on how the author came to have and love a house bunny. Profits go to Rabbit Rescue. Also recommended earlier by Roxanne.
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Other Stories The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Other Stories
by Robert Louis Stevenson

A first rate murder mystery with literary merit.
The Preservationist The Preservationist
by David Maine

A retelling of the Noah's Ark story - a most refreshing book about spiritual life.
Rough Music Rough Music and Aerodynamics of Pork
by Patrick Gale

Quirky novels by a British writer. Fascinating characters with splendid surprising turns. Rough Music is the best.
