"My book buddies, Roxanne Coady of R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT, Dr. Rose Quiello, lecturer in English at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, and enthusiastic reader Sally Gessner join me in the studio every two weeks. Occasionally Lee Jacobus, author and former professor at the University of Connecticut, drops in as well.

We tell you about the books we've enjoyed recently, and listeners are invited to tell us about your favorite books on line. E-mail us at faithwnpr@aol.com. Tell us in a couple of sentences about an all-time favorite book, or a recent great read, and why you love it. Adults and children are welcome! We'll read your letters over the air."

RECENT BOOKS

Show Date: January 6, 2006

ROXANNE'S PICKS:

The Woman in White The Woman in White
by Wilke Collins

This classic has just opened on Broadway. The play hasn't gotten great reviews, so you can skip it and read the book, which is a mystery-love story and one of my all-time favorites. Although written by a contemporary of Dickens, it has a very modern feel in its pacing and has all the ingredients of a great read.
Time Alive Time Alive: Celebrate Your Life Everyday
by Alexandra Stoddard

By the author of a number of decor books, this is a book to remind you that 'now' is the important time in your life, rather than some vague time in the future.
The Trouble with Poetry The Trouble with Poetry: and Other Poems
by Billy Collins

A new collection of poetry by one of the best known contemporary poets. It is smart, light, and magically familiar.
Leonardo the Terrible Monster Leonardo the Terrible Monster
by Mo Willems

Poor Leonardo, he's a monster that just can't scare anyone, so he decides to become a great friend instead. This is my pick for the fun new picture book for kids.
The Birds of Central Park
by Cal Vornberger

A mesmerizing photography book, with incredibly detailed shots of birds within their habitat. Magnificent!
Cool Stuff Cool Stuff and How It Works
by Chris Woodford, James Flint, Ben Morgan, Clint Witchalls, Luke Collins

A great book for kids to avoid doing homework with! Explains how all sorts of things - sneakers, computers, sports equipment - do what they do.

LEE'S PICKS:
Playing the Piano for Pleasure Playing the Piano for Pleasure
by Charles Cooke

For those of you who, like me, decide to start to play the piano at 41 instead of 4, this is the great classic. It talks about how you should practice, what types of pieces you should play, how to make the music a part of you - things that your piano teacher will not tell you.
Mere Christianity Mere Christianity
by C.S. Lewis

The fundamentals of Christianity by the author of the Narnia books. The reality of what being a Christian means from a deep thinker, a scholar, and a former atheist. This originally was a series of talks given on BBC radio and therefore it is very accessible - a conversation with a remarkable mind.
Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess
by Bobby Fischer, Stuart Margulies, Don Mosenfelder

A great book if you are interested in learning to play chess (and everyone should). A wonderful introduction, and filled with diagrams. Chess is a game of strategy, which builds new synapses in your brain and keeps it strong, young, and imaginative. The best book if you are just learning or if you want to brush up on your fundamental theory.
The Education of Henry Adams The Education of Henry Adams
by Henry Adams

Originally written for only 100 people, this is wonderful glimpse into American history by someone who was in the center of it. The grandson and great-grandson of presidents and the son of an ambassador to England during the Civil War, Adams lived a life of intellectual complexity at a time of powerful change in American education, industry, and culture. One of the greatest American books.
A New You A New You: Words to Sooth the Mind, Body, and Spirit
by Catherine Galasso-Vigorito

A very lovely book to help renew your spirit, particularly this time of year, by a columnist for the New Haven Register.

ROSE'S PICKS:
On Beauty On Beauty
by Zadie Smith

By the author of White Teeth, this is the story of two racially-mixed families, headed by academics, both of whom are writing rival works on Rembrandt. Beautifully written, celebrated by the critics, this comedy of manners is a really remarkable accomplishment.
Our Endangered Values Our Endangered Values: America's Moral Crisis
by Jimmy Carter

Written by the first born-again Christian to be elected president, this is a balanced but strong attack on the current lack of separation between Church and State. Carter speaks out about Bush, nuclear war, terrorism, and the death penalty in a clear and lucid way. An important read.
I Thought My Father Was God I Thought My Father Was God: And Other True Tales from NPR's National Story Project
by Paul Auster (Editor), Nelly Reifler (Editor)

A compilation of tales from NPR's National Story Project for listeners who have had 'driveway moments' listening to the radio. Wonderful stories, hilarious blunders, miraculous encounters, near-death experiences - and available in both print and audio versions.
Runaway Runaway: Stories
by Alice Monro

A new collection of short stories by one of Canada's top writers. Peopled by primarily women and their parents, lovers, and children, these are like mini-novels. Her writing is clear and perfect and her stories make you think about your life and choices.

FAITH'S PICKS:
Healthy Aging Healthy Aging: A Lifelong Guide to Your Physical and Spiritual Well-Being

The Complete Guide to Zoning The Complete Guide to Zoning: How Real Estate Owners and Developers Can Create and Preserve Property Value
by Dwight H. Merriam

A new book from a prominent land use attorney in Hartford; a guide book for anyone who has to deal with land, development, or environmental protection issues.
Wise Thoughts for Everyday Wise Thoughts for Everyday: On God, Love, the Human Spirit, and Living a Good Life
by Leo Tolstoy

Tolstoy's journal containing the religious and spiritual points that had special meaning for him, and that he used as a guide for his life.
The Flying Book The Flying Book: Everything You've Ever Wondered About Flying on Airplanes
by David Blatner

A great book for people with a fear of flying - or for those of us who simply can't understand how something that heavy can possible get off the ground! Very calming and terrific.
The City of Falling Angels The City of Falling Angels
by John Berens

The latest book from the author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, this is the (true) story of the fire that destroyed the Fineci Opera House in Venice. Powerful and moving, as well as being a wonderful armchair travel book. Pretty terrific!
