"My book buddies, Roxanne Coady of R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT, Dr. Rose Quiello, lecturer in English at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, and enthusiastic reader Sally Gessner join me in the studio every two weeks. Occasionally Lee Jacobis, author and former professor at the University of Connecticut, drops in as well.

We tell you about the books we've enjoyed recently, and listeners are invited to tell us about your favorite books on line. E-mail us at faithwnpr@aol.com. Tell us in a couple of sentences about an all-time favorite book, or a recent great read, and why you love it. Adults and children are welcome! We'll read your letters over the air."

ROXANNE'S PICKS:
The Birthday Party The Birthday Party: A Memoir of Survival
by Stanley N. Alpert

Alpert, a federal prosecutor, gets held up by thugs who want him to withdraw money on his ATM card. When they discover his bank balance, they decide to kidnap him, in hopes of greater profit. So Alpert spends his 38th birthday, blindfolded in a Brooklyn apartment, being threatened, asked for advice, and offered sexual favors! This sounds like a thriller, but is completely true. Not a great book, but an interesting read; Alpert does a great job describing what the experience felt like.
Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant: And Other Poems
by Jack Prelutsky and Carin Berger

This is a great kids' poetry book, filled with wonderful invented animals (what happens when you cross a toaster with a toad?). Prelutsky has the heart of a little kid and knows what they will be happy hearing.
Bambi Vs. Godzilla Bambi Vs. Godzilla: On the Nature, Purpose, and Practice of the Movie Business
by David Mamet

An exposé of the movie business from an insider! Mamet is an award-winning playwright and screenwriter and has written a short, snappy, smart take on filmmaking and what really goes on. I had a ball reading it.
Colleges That Change Lives Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools That Will Change the Way You Think about Colleges
by Loren Pope

This is a great book for high school kids (and their parents) who are starting to look at colleges. Pope highlights colleges that produce 'performers' and they are not necessarily the colleges you might expect - his evaluations of programs and campus 'personalities' is supplemented by students and faculty comments.
A Whole New Mind A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future
by Daniel Pink

This is the best new business book - but it's not just about business. According to Pink, the people who will change the world are right-brainers - artists, inventors, story-tellers - who develop the (6) senses of design, story, symphony, empathy, play, and meaning. A provocative book that presents a more open, innovative way to think about how we learn and what we do.

ROSE'S PICKS:
Empire Falls The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11
by Lawrence Wright

Wright is a journalist for The New Yorker and this is his take on how 9-11 happened. This one is remarkable, non-political, and reads like a novel because Wright focuses on the people involved - it's a biography of Bin Laden. This is the best book - second only to Bin Laden's memoirs!
The Double Bind The Double Bind
by Chris A. Bohjalian

From the author of 'Midwives', this is a literary thriller, dealing with personal and social issues, and with allusions to The Great Gatsby. Laura Estabrook befriends a homeless man while working in a shelter in Vermont, and we soon discover that nothing is as it first appears.

LEE'S PICKS:
Demonology Demonology
by Rick Moody

A book of short stories from the author of The Ice Storm, and Garden State, these are wonderful, fascinating, and very imaginative. Stories for readers who are (or would like to be) writers.
The Fabric of the Cosmos The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time, and the Texture of Reality
by Brian Greene

I don't completely understand this yet, but this is an interesting, fascinating book about the world of quantum physics and string theory. Written by a physicist for the general reader, this provides a tantalizing glimpse into the concepts and theories that scientists use to define the space around us.
