"My book buddies, Roxanne Coady of R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT, Dr. Rose Quiello, lecturer in English at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, and enthusiastic reader Sally Gessner join me in the studio every two weeks. Occasionally Lee Jacobis, author and former professor at the University of Connecticut, drops in as well.

We tell you about the books we've enjoyed recently, and listeners are invited to tell us about your favorite books on line. E-mail us at faithwnpr@aol.com. Tell us in a couple of sentences about an all-time favorite book, or a recent great read, and why you love it. Adults and children are welcome! We'll read your letters over the air."

RECENT BOOKS

Show Date: March 30th, 2007

ROSE'S PICKS:
A Mango-Shaped Space A Mango-Shaped Space
by Wendy Mass

This was the enthusiastic recommendation of one of the 6th graders who were on the show a few weeks ago. ItÕs a story about Mia, a 13-year-old 7th grader with synesthesia Š words and objects for her have colors and shapes. I bought the book for a couple of kids that I know, including a Mia who doesn't like to read at all - but she absolutely loves this book! This is a great book to turn kids on to reading - great for ages 9-13.
The Namesake The Namesake
by Jhumpa Lahiri

The author of Interpreter of Maladies, has written this novel, charting the life of a first generation Indian American couple and their son, the oddly named Gogol. A story of generations and expections, this is one of her best works.
Not Forgotten Not Forgotten
by David Mamet

I recently lost my dog, Maggie, and a friend gave me this book and it has provided so much comfort. Compiled by the author of the Carl, the Rottweiller books, it is a collection of illustrations from a variety of artists complemented by moving captions. The perfect book to give to a anyone who has lost an animal.
The Photograph The Photograph
by Penelope Lively

This is a favorite. A husband, going through the attic, finds an envelope marked Do Not Open, but of course, he does. It contains a photograph, taken from the back, of his recently deceased wife holding a stranger's hand. In trying to find the answer to the photograph he goes on a journey of discovery and finds that he really never knew his wife.

LEE'S PICKS:
The Kite Runner The Kite Runner
by Khaled Hosseini

This is an extraordinary portrait of a young man who has to live with the guilt of a personal crime; it is also an intense portrait of what life was like in Afghanistan before and after the Soviet invasion. A book that everyone loves!
The History Boys The History Boys
by Alan Bennett

This is a Tony-Award winning play (which reads well as a book), about 8 boys, preparing for Oxbridge entrance exams, and the four very different teachers who are tutoring them. It starts with an interesting introduction about the relationship between the author's schooling and the story itself.
Hark! Hark! A Novel of the 87th Precinct
by Ed McBain

An 87th Precinct mystery that is a total fabrication but a delightful confection. The Deaf Man, a master criminal, haunts the precinct with cryptic messages from Shakespeare giving clues about a future crime. Filled with word play as well as suspense.
Grant Grant: Memoirs and Selected Letters
by Alan Bennett

In his later years Grant had to write his memoirs in order to earn money - and he writes clearly and beautifully about his boyhood, West Point, and the war with Mexico. His letters, especially to his wife, are touching and give an added dimension. A must if you are a Civil War buff.

FAITH'S PICKS:
McMansion McMansion
by Justin Scott

I mentioned that I was going to read this book a few weeks ago, and now I have and I loved it. Ben Abbott is a realtor and part-time detective in Newbury CT who sets about to solve the death of a greedy developer who has been run over by a bulldozer. Lots of interesting characters - you'll have a very good time with this.
To My Dearest Friends
by Patricia Volk

I adore this book. It is a delicious novel, set in NYC, about two woman who have never met until a mutual friend dies, and requests that they go to her safe deposit box and open it -- together. What they find there is a love letter that sets them on a journey of discovery.
eBay for Dummies eBay for Dummies
by Marsha Collier

This is an incredibly helpful resource if you are thinking of either bidding or selling on Ebay. Collier clearly explains the process, with detailed, simple instructions and strategies for winning - whether you are looking to buy or hoping to sell. (She'll be on the show soon.)
Women Explorers Women Explorers
by Sharon M. Hannon

There are lots of books out there about men and their adventures; this is one about the women throughout history who have had dangerous expeditions and fascinating adventures. A small gem.
