"My book buddies, Roxanne Coady of R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT, Dr. Rose Quiello, lecturer in English at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, and enthusiastic reader Sally Gessner join me in the studio every two weeks. Occasionally Lee Jacobus, author and former professor at the University of Connecticut, drops in as well.

We tell you about the books we've enjoyed recently, and listeners are invited to tell us about your favorite books on line. E-mail us at faithwnpr@aol.com. Tell us in a couple of sentences about an all-time favorite book, or a recent great read, and why you love it. Adults and children are welcome! We'll read your letters over the air."

 ROSE'S PICKS:

The Bureau and the Mole: The Unmasking of Robert Philip Hanssen, the Most Dangerous Double Agent in FBI History
by David A. Vise

A fascinating account of Robert Hanssen's life that lead him to become a super double agent combined with the story of FBI director Louis Freeh's struggle to discover and expose him. Includes some truly "eye-popping" similarities between the two. Not the most well-written of Vise's books but certainly an amazing story. |

Feast: Food to Celebrate Life
by Richard Rhodes

Lawson loves the pleasure and sensuality of food -- cranberry-orange-almond Christmas pudding, smaltzy chicken, finger-licking ribs, pumpkin seed brittle -- this is a 'feast' of a cookbook. Filled with beautiful photos and wonderful multi-ethnic menus for all sorts of events, as well as shopping lists and small essays to introduce each holiday, this is a book for those who love to cook, eat, and feed friends and family. |

Written Lives
by Javier Marias

A wonderful book - once you start reading this it will become addicting. Marias spares you from getting bogged down in large, comprehensive biographies; rather he gives you significant 'snippets' from the lives of about twenty writers in 5-6 pages each. This is the highest imaginable level of literary gossip! |
 |
The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter
by Carson McCullers

Mick Kelly, the narrator of this classic and a stand-in for Carson McCullers, gathers a collection of misfits in her small southern town - John Singer, a deaf mute; a black physician; Blunt, a Marxist. Written in the forties, this is an astounding piece of literature, most impressive in the way McCullers handles both white and Negro characters with ease and justice. One of Oprah's book selections. |

The Secrets of Judas: The Story of the Misunderstood Disciple and His Lost Gospel
by James M. Robinson

This just published - it is the story of a leather-bound codex found in an Egytian field in the 1980's that was finally authenticated as a 4th century version of The Gospel of Judas. The subject of a recent National Geographic film, this is an extraordinary book, which presents a very different view of Christianity as we know it. |
 |
The Dead Yard
by Adrian McKinty

A mystery novel revolving around an IRA cell in the US, this is extremely descriptive, gritty, and violent, with everything told in intimate detail. It's not my style, so I can't really recommend it, but it is a thought-provoking look at totalitarian action and the dangers of extreme nationalism.

The Early Birds: A Mother's Story for Our Times
by Jenny Minton

In 2002 Jenny Minton, a free-lance writer from Connecticut, had twin boys, Sam and Gus, who were born severely premature at just 31 weeks. They spent the next 64 days in the neonatal unit and Jenny has just published a book chronicling the event. (50% of the profits are to go to March of Dimes). |

Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon
by Daniel C. Dennett

Dennett is a professor at Tufts University and an expert on evolutionary theory. He has written what is sure to be a very controversial book on the role of religious belief in our lives. He explores, with great respect, the phenomenom of belief, of how and why religion plays such an important role in our lives and culture, and why we need to be open about religion and to question its tenets. Makes for a fascinating read. |
