Occasionally Lee Jacobis, author and former professor at the University of Connecticut, drops in as well.

ROXANNE'S PICKS:
Send Send The Essential Guide to Email for Office and Home
by David Shipley and Will Schwalbe

Welcome to the world of email – intrusive, efficient (or not) and incredibly time-consuming, but an everyday part of our life. This is a great little book that talks about email, and what to do about it, in an intellectual and practical way. Filled with really good advice on what to do, and what not to do, with this element of our digital age.
Temples and Palaces An Anthology of Great U.S. Women Poets 1850-1990: Temples and Palaces
edited by Glenn Richard Ruihley

I love the physicality of this book: its unusual shape, colors, and beautiful pages make it wonderful to hold and read. Plus it is a poetry book, filled with the magic of simple words conveying vivid images. This is a great anthology, filled with both the poets you know and probably a number that you have never heard of before.
Boomsday Boomsday
by Christopher Buckley

Cassandra Devine, a young blogger, decides that the aging baby-boomer generation is using up way too many resources, and launches a campaign to encourage ‘transitioning’ – offering government incentives to commit suicide at 75! She links up with a senator, stages demonstrations at retirement resort golf courses, and brings her campaign all the way to Washington. Buckley has great fun with this ridiculous – but thought-provoking – premise.
How I Write How I Write: The Secret Lives of Authors
edited by Dan Crowe

Filled with wonderful little stories of all of your favorite authors, one after another, and filled with their mementos, this graphically interesting book (it is published by Rizzoli) is inspiring and fun. Great for readers, writers, and lovers of secret gossip!
Growing Up Growing Up
by Russell Baker

ROSE'S PICKS:
Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea:Why the Greeks Matter
by Thomas Cahill

Another book on the influence of the Greeks – you already know this, except perhaps you don’t. Yes the Greeks provided us the foundation for much of our language, religion, and politics – but also our militarism, slavery, and our exclusion and segregation of women. A fascinating study and very readable.
The Teammates The Teammates
by David Halberstam

A wonderful sports book by the (late) journalist. Here he chronicles the long-term friendship of four icons of the Red Sox -- Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Dom DiMaggio, and Johnny Peske, as two of them (DiMaggio and Peske) drive to Florida to visit the dying Williams. You don’t have to be a Red Sox fan to love this book – even Yankee fans will enjoy it.
Small Wonder Small Wonder: Essays
by Barbara Kingsolver

I love everything that Kingsolver writes. In addition to being a talented novelist, she is also an ardent environmentalist and this is a collection of thoughtful essays on living well and justly on this earth, in order to make our lives safer and healthier. Warm, soft and impassioned.

LEE'S PICKS:
On Beauty On Beauty
by Zadie Smith

This masterful work riffs on E.M. Forester’s Howard’s End, but this time with a painting rather than a house as the center piece. A complicated, but delightful story of two very different families, connected through love. Beautiful, truthful, and written with marvelous style.
The JFK Assassination Debates: The JFK Assassination Debates:Lone Gunman versus Conspiracy
by Eric Campbell

This is a comprehensive, scholarly look (published by the University of Kansas Press) at the debate that has raged for the last forty years over JKF’s assassination. Kurtz doesn’t have an answer, but analyzes all that we do know, and what we don’t, and raises some interesting issues. Sober, studied, stunning – and I couldn’t put it down.
How to Become a Famous Writer Before You’re Dead: How to Become a Famous Writer Before You’re Dead: Your Words in Print and Your Name in Lights
by Ariel Gore

A friend, who wanted to meet with Gore to get advice on becoming a successful writer, died before the meeting took place, so Gore decided to turn the advice that she would have given her friend into to a book for all aspiring writers (especially younger ones). Filled with useful advice for both writing and marketing (equally or perhaps more important), both from Gore as well as from other successful literary lights.

FAITH'S PICKS:
Away Away
by Amy Bloom

This isn’t coming out until August 21st, but it will make a great late summer beach read. I just finished it and it is one of the best novels I’ve read. Set in the 1920’s on the lower east side of NYC, it is an amazing saga that sweeps across the country and beyond (even into Siberia). This may very well be THE book of the fall.
The Dog Ate It The Dog Ate It: Cooking for Yourself and Your Four-Legged Friends
by Linda West Eckhardt, Barbara Bradley, with Judy Kern

Shields has written Snow Diaries and Unless. This is about a man born in the 1950's who leads a mundane, working class life. While in England at Hampton Court, he gets lost in the maze. And he realizes that wrong turns can turn into right turns, and he winds up getting obsessed about mazes. What makes this so wonderful is that the minutia of our lives are turned into these wonderful passages...tiny moments of clarity.
Fine Waters Fine Waters: A Connoisseur's Guide to the World's Most Distinctive Bottled Waters
by Michael Mascha

Here is the ultimate guide to all of those bottled waters that are out there now. This guide gives you tasting notes for many of the ‘gourmet’ waters that are available, with descriptions, characteristics, and even recommended food pairings. Fun, amusing – and you thought water was just water!
Marshes Marshes: The Disappearing Edens
by William Burt

This is a gorgeous book by Old Lyme nature photographer William Burt. 90 large-format photographs of marshes from around North America, this is a ‘breathtakingly beautiful’ work, with the images accompanied by Burt’s own commentary.
