 Roxanne's Picks:

I & Dog
by Monks of New Skete

A book that includes photographs and text. This book talks about the connection between humans and dogs. I know you're probably grimacing but this book nonetheless charmed me, even being a modest dog lover. |
 |
A Bend in the River
by V.S. Naipaul

This is a story about a fictitious African country revolution in the early 1960's. A riveting story in every way and feels very contemporary. It examines the notion of the skinny little line between revolutionaries fighting for their own freedom and terrorism. It helps you understand the impact of having an occupying country take over your own country and also helps to understand how you turn your country into what you want it to be. |

Shadow Divers
by Robert Kurson

The adventure read for the summer! It's about a topic I could care less about - diving for shipwrecks and u-boats. I couldn't put it down and learned so much about the peril of diving. He meshes both the adventure (discovering the submarine), the peril of it and does a great job introducing you to the 2 divers who risk their lives. I was fascinated - good or better than Perfect Storm.

 |
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
by Gregory Maguire

The book in which the musical is based upon. It's a fantasy book and turns Wizard of Oz completely upside down. My 13 year old son loved it! |
|
 |
Wemberly Worried
by Kevin Henkes

A delicious picture book about Wemberly who is worried about starting school. He starts school, quickly makes a friend and winds up being very happy. A great book for children just starting school, but also for anybody who has any type of anxiety - such as starting a new job. |

Terror in the Name of God
by Jessica Stern

This is Jessica Stern's attempt to understand terrorists, which doesn't lead to condoning terrorism, but tries to get to the heart of it. Stern was one of the lead journalists after 9/11. She discovered that terrorists normally lead a simple life and use terrorism as a way of transforming themselves. A very important book for us to be reading that doesn't have a political view and is not written in academic language. |
|
 |
Brother and Sister
by Joanne Trollope

The story of an adopted brother and sister who are raised by the same parents and decide to find their real parents when they are well into their 30's. It examines how their need to find their real birth parents affects everyone in their families - spouses, children. |
 |
The Distinguished Guest
by Sue Miller

A beautiful book about an old, successful writer who becomes ill and is forced to live with her son. Bringing this mother and son together later in life, forces them both to re-examine their relationship and why they made the choices they did. |
 |
The New Elegant But Easy Cookbook
by Marian Burros

Very simple and very easy recipes. I will give it to lots of friends and family for the holidays. I want to highlight the word easy - recipe for plum tart requires 6 ingredients that you can easily find in your kitchen. |

The Origins of Totalitarianism
by Hannah Arendt

A huge book which is gives a lot of detail and gives an astounding insight in to the way that. A very serious and very remarkable book |
|
 |
Captains Courageous
by Rudyard Kipling

The kind of a book that appeals much more to adults than children. A story of a young boy who is the son of a very wealthy man who owns a railroad. The boy winds up going overboard on a boat and a fisherman rescues him. The boy goes from being a spoiled brat to getting a good sense of himself. Also very interesting to read if you have an interest in fishing and the railroad. |
 |
Bad Business
by Robert B. Parker

Parker is a great writer and the main character, Spenser, is irresistible. A fun book that involves murder, deception, corporate fraud - all of this makes for a great mystery. |
 |
|
The Age of Innocence
by Edith Wharton

The story of New York high society in the 1870'1930's. 2 people are trying to burst out of the envelope and never quite can. An interesting book about people who can't live by the rules, and also fascinating to read what life was like in New York during that time. |
 |
Absolute Friends
by John le Carre

Set in the days when Berlin was still divided, this is an astonishing read with a remarkable, unexpected ending. |

The Notebook
by Nicholas Sparks

A simple love story of two people who meet when they were young and know they are meant not to be together. It's about how to and whether to give up hope that you will meet again. And is also about how love can be so profound that your loyalty to that person never dies. This is a simple, easy, beach read. |
 |
The Remarkable Farkle McBride
by John Lithgow

This is a great children's book with terrific illustrations. The story centers around a young boy who falls in love with instrument after instrument after instrument. After he's gone through all the instruments in the orchestra, he takes over the role of conductor when the conductor gets sick and realizes that conducting is his true passion. |

|
Robert Polidori Havana
by Robert Polidori

The best photography book I have seen in decades. These are large format, full color shots of the interiors of people's homes in Havana, Cuba. A stunning look of what was there a long time ago, how the buildings and architecture have decayed, and how there's still life and creativity there today. It also gives you a great understanding of the society classes from yesterday and today. |
 |
The Good Nanny
by Benjamin Cheever

This is a tremendous novel about exposing the shortcomings of wealthy people living in the New York suburbs. Cheever goes after ambition, materialism, people who live sheltered lives and he really makes you think about social issues. Cheever can be hysterically funny, tough, tender-hearted and all of this makes for such a great writer and such a great read. |
 |
|
All-Night Party: The Women of Bohemian Greenwich Village and Harlem, 1913-1930
by Andrea Barnet

In New York City at this time, women were described as "thinkers and drinkers". This was a crazy, wild time and was an extraordinary period of cultural freedom for American women. These women were some of the early feminists in the art world. |
