"My book buddies, Roxanne Coady of R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT, Dr. Rose Quiello, lecturer in English at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, and enthusiastic reader Sally Gessner join me in the studio every two weeks. Occasionally Lee Jacobis, author and former professor at the University of Connecticut, drops in as well.

We tell you about the books we've enjoyed recently, and listeners are invited to tell us about your favorite books on line. E-mail us at faithwnpr@aol.com. Tell us in a couple of sentences about an all-time favorite book, or a recent great read, and why you love it. Adults and children are welcome! We'll read your letters over the air."

 ROSE'S PICKS:
|
 |
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
My best book this year - moving intellectually, poetically, and spiritually. The novel involves a father and his son walking down a road in a post-apocalyptic time - a tale full of despair and hope, both at the same time. The language is pared down and brilliant, mirroring the landscape. A must read! (Won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction). |
 |
House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III
Colonel Behrani purchases an auctioned house for his family, attempting to achieve a measure of stability for his exiled family. The house, inherited by Kathy Nicolo, was up for auction due to an oversight on her part - and the result is a clash of hopes and cultures. Dubus tells both sides of the same story and makes you feel for both parties - this is a story you will never forget. |
 |
The Double Bind
by Chris Bohjalian
Laura, working in a homeless shelter, befriends Bobbie Crocker. When he dies, she 'inherits' a box of his photographs, shots of the rich and famous, many from her home town of West Egg, Long Island. Searching through them and tracking down their clues, she becomes convinced that he was Daisy and Tom Buchanan's son (from the Great Gatsby). A wild literary thriller, and Bohjalian pulls it off

LEE'S PICKS:

|
 |
Philosopher's Pupil
by Iris Murdoch
Be warned - this is a very complex but really terrific book - I couldn't stop reading it. Set in the English spa town of Ennistone, the story revolves around a philospher (turned mathmetician) Roznov, an enchanter, and his one-time pupil, George. If you like complicated plots and eccentric characters, this is a superb book for you.
|
Crime Beat:A Decade of Covering Cops and Killers
by Michael Connelly
From the writer of crime novels, here is the story of his life as a crime reporter in Florida and Los Angeles. Divided into 3 sections - cops, killers, and cases - it shows you how he got involved in the crime scene, and how all of his novels derive from his reporting experiences.
|
 |
Terrorist
by John Updike
This is Updike's newest novel, very different from his usual. It is the story of Amhad, an 18-year old Irish-Egyptian high school student in urban New Jersey, who becomes involved with a local mosque in a search for the spiritual way, while existing in our materialistic society. This is a remarkable analysis of what is wrong with our society from the point of view of a differing cultural perspective.

Got What It Takes: Successful People Reveal How They Made It to the Top
by Bill Boggs

The New York talk show host has interviewed 44 successful and accomplished people - Bobbi Brown, Joseph Abboud, Norman Lear, Brooke Shields, Joe Torre, among others - to get their perspective on why they succeeded. How much was luck, how much was purposeful? An inside look at some of our most notable personalities. |
 |
Away
by Amy Bloom

A breath-taking book from the well-known short story writer. The story of Lillian Leyb, who comes to America after her family is destroyed in a Russian pogrom. Involved in the Yiddish theatre in NY, she hears that her daughter might still be alive, and she sets off on a remarkable journey of discovery. The writing is gorgeous, the story fabulous - this is a sensational book that matters. |
 |
Party of the Century: The Fabulous Story of Truman Capote and His Black-and-White Ball
by Deborah Davis

Shortly after the successful publication of In Cold Blood, Capote decided to stage the biggest society party - his masked black-and-white ball at the Plaza Hotel. Outrageous, extravagant, and filled with photos, I adored this book - and you will have the best time reading it! |
 |
Louis I. Kahn: Beyond Time & Style
by Carter Wiseman

The first in-depth biographical study of the brilliant but elusive architect who fundamentally redefined twentieth-century architecture. |
