ROXANNE'S PICKS:

The Tender Bar: A Memoir The Tender Bar: A Memoir
by J. R. Moehringer

You heard it here first. This is going to be THE biggest book of the fall. A touching memoir of growing up as the only child of a single mom in Manhasset, LI. You will fall in love with the author, a national correspondent for the LA Times, from page one. Everything is right about this one.
How Now: 100 Ways to Celebrate the Present Moment How Now: 100 Ways to Celebrate the Present Moment
by Raphael Cushnir & Pornchai Mittongtare

One hundred practices – some silly, some possible – to help you live in the now. What this book does do is to help you think about what the obstacles are that block you from being 'present.'
Made a Difference for That One: A Surgeon's Letters Home from Iraq
compiled by Meredith Coppola

E-mails sent home by a pediatric surgeon who is in Iraq with the airforce, as compiled and edited by his wife. Dr. Coppola is not a professional writer, so these letters have a real-life, day-to-day quality that is quite compelling and gives a very different view of the war.
Through the Eyes of the Gods: An Aerial Vision of Africa Through the Eyes of the Gods: An Aerial Vision of Africa
by Robert B. Haas, Bobby Haas, Kuki Gallmann

One of the most beautiful photographic books ever – magnificent! Aerial photos, but taken from a surprisingly close perspective, with amazing detail – they are like looking at abstract paintings.

ROSE'S PICKS:
Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl
by Harriet Jacobs

Not an easy read, but a must read. This authentic slave narrative, one of the few by a woman, was published shortly before the Civil War. Written to enlist the support of Northern white women without alienating them, this deals with the role of truth in an autobiography. Harrowing and moving, it is an important piece in understanding the history of our country.
The Bone People The Bone People
by Keri Hulme

One of my all time favorite books. Set in New Zealand, this is the story of 3 misfits, Kerewin, an artist, Simon, a ship-wrecked boy, and Joe, his "rescuer", and how their lives become intertwined. Rich in Maori myths and culture, this novel has a wonderful "messiness" about it.
Conduct Unbecoming a Woman: Medicine on Trial in Turn-of-the–Century Brooklyn Conduct Unbecoming a Woman: Medicine on Trial in Turn-of-the–Century Brooklyn
by Regina Morantz-Sanchez

An historic "who-done-it," this book focuses on the trial of a pioneering surgeon, Dr. Mary Dixon-Jones, who is charged with manslaughter in the death of a 26-year old patient. With both the newspapers and public opinion against her, she wins her case and goes on to sue for libel. A great story, and also an interesting take on the social implications of being an assertive and accomplished women in the late 19th century.

SALLY'S PICKS:
The Rivals: Chris Evert Vs. Martina Navratilova Their Epic Duels and Extraordinary Friendship The Rivals: Chris Evert Vs. Martina Navratilova Their Epic Duels and Extraordinary Friendship
by Johnette Howard

For tennis lovers, this is a great book about the rivalry and great friendship between these two wonderful and remarkable women. At a time when tennis was extremely popular, they dominated the sport for eleven years, and changed the way it was both played and perceived.
With No One as Witness
by Elizabeth George

This is the newest in Elizabeth George's British police procedural series, with Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers working to solve a case involving a serial killer and boys from a teen rehab center, all the while dealing with the traumas in their personal lives. Involving and complex with an unexpected ending.
Video Hound's Golden Movie Retriever 2005 Video Hound's Golden Movie Retriever 2005
edited by Jim Craddock

A huge (literally and figuratively) resource for the movie buff, or even the casual movie fan who is just trying to remember a particular film. This is definitely the best of its breed with 26,000 reviews.

FAITH'S PICKS:
What Erika Wants What Erika Wants
by Bruce Clements

The author of this soon-to-be-released book is on the board of the Children's Law Center in Hartford, an organization that acts as advocates for children caught in high-risk custody cases. He has written a most tender, gripping novel about a child caught in one of these cases and the lawyer who works with her. A dramatic and fantastic story, and all of the profits will go to the Law Center.
Pardonable Lies: A Maisie Dobbs Novel Pardonable Lies: A Maisie Dobbs Novel
by Jacqueline Winspear

This is the third and newest in the Maisie Dobbs series. Maisie is not only an investigator but also a psychologist, which gives a unique twist to the telling. Here, she attempts to find out whether a friend's son really did die during The Great War or not. Tricky, with many threads that weave together to make a great tale.
Breaking the Chains: A Catholic Memoir
by Dr. Robert J. Willis

Willis writes about his decision to become a Jesuit priest, his struggles within the Church (this is during the Vietnam War) and his eventual decision to leave and the repercussions of that decision.
Little Chapel on the River: A Pub, a Town and the Search for What Matters Most Little Chapel on the River: A Pub, a Town and the Search for What Matters Most
by Gwendolyn Bounds

A Wall Street Journal columnist, Bounds left her Manhattan home after 9/11 and founds herself in Garrison, NY at Guinan's, a neighborhood Irish pub and country store. She ends up moving to Garrison, becoming a pub regular and eventually working at there. This the story of the pub, of the neighborhood, and of finding a sense of community.
The Battlefield of Your Body The Battlefield of Your Body
by Bessie Reyna

A new book of poetry by a Connecticut poet, originally from Cuba, who is a participant in the Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. Available through the bookstore at the Hill-Stead Museum.
The Joy is in the Journey: A Woman's Guide Through Crisis and Change The Joy is in the Journey: A Woman's Guide Through Crisis and Change
by Betty Hill Crowson

One of the clearest self-help books I've read – 8 practical ideas to guide a woman through her many life changes.
