"My book buddies, Roxanne Coady of R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT, Dr. Rose Quiello, lecturer in English at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, and enthusiastic reader Sally Gessner join me in the studio every two weeks. Occasionally Lee Jacobus, author and former professor at the University of Connecticut, drops in as well.

We tell you about the books we've enjoyed recently, and listeners are invited to tell us about your favorite books on line. E-mail us at faithwnpr@aol.com. Tell us in a couple of sentences about an all-time favorite book, or a recent great read, and why you love it. Adults and children are welcome! We'll read your letters over the air."

 ROXANNE'S PICKS:

I Feel Bad about My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman
by Nora Ephron

This is a must-read for every woman 40 and up. I read this book at 1:30 in the morning and laughed so hard I woke up my husband. The woman who brought you When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle, takes on aging and its tribulations including purses, maintenance, and necks!

 |
So Few of Me
by Peter H. Reynolds

This is a charming kid's picture book that is for adults too. Leo is a busy lad with a to-do list that keeps growing, so he keeps getting additional copies of himself to help out, until he realizes that what he needs is just one of him, and a shorter to-do list. |
 |
Coronado
by Dennis Lehane

From the author of Mystic River, this is a collection of unbelievably appealing short stories. The main characters are gritty trailer-park men - Lehane gets their characters exactly right and you become immersed in their world. |
 |
Sonoma Diet
by Connie Guttersen

It's time to go on a diet again, and this time I am going to try this one. There are no foods you can't eat, but rather an emphasis on portion size and healthy, wholesome foods. This was Oprah's #1 choice for diet books - and there is a book of recipes due out shortly. |
 |
Sophie's Choice
by William Styron

The New York Times recently published a list of the best fiction books, and this was one of the ones that I reread. The subject is difficult and painful but I was struck by how incredibly brilliant the writing is - rarely do you have writing this good, that is so satisfying and filling to read. (Also mentioned: books by Cormac McCarthy, and Self-Consuming Artifacts, by Stanley Fish) |

The 9/11 Commission Report: Final Report of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States
by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks

After the ABC docudrama and all of the politics, this is the actual report, readable and factual, entirely accessible and non-partisan. |

Aftermath: World Trade Center Archive
by Joel Meyerowitz

This is a big picture book by the America's premier color photographer. Here he has documented the clean-up of the Twin Towers site, taking 8,000 photos over 5 years at Ground Zero, and providing an unprecedented archive of the attack and recovery effort. |

 |
The House on Mango Street
by Sandra Cisneros

I had read this book a while ago, but then came across the CD, read by the author, and found it much stronger. Cisneros is a Mexican-American writer, reflecting on her childhood in this novel of a young girl, Esperanza, growing up in a Latino community in Chicago. It is a touching and sweet story, but what is truly remarkable is how authentic she has made her young heroine's voice.
(Also mentioned: Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons) |

The New Oxford Book of Literary Anecdotes
by John Gross

Telling tales of your favorite authors - these all come from diaries or other contemporary writings. Wonderful anecdotes and literary jokes about authors from Shakespeare to Blake to Keats to Rushdie. Not a book to read cover to cover, but to dip into as fancy dictates. |
|
 |
Oh, Play That Thing
by Roddy Doyle

This is the second book in a new trilogy by one of my favorite Irish novelists. (The first book is Star Called Henry). Here Henry Smart, an IRA assassin, comes the NYC in 1924, a hunted man after the Irish Revolution. Making his way, he manages to anger the crime families on this side of the Atlantic, but also discovers jazz and links up with Louie Armstrong. Set in New York and Chicago (Doyle has done an amazing amount of research) this is terrific, action-packed, and written in a fast-paced, 'jazz' style. |

Watching the World Change: The Stories Behind the Images of 9/11
by David Friend

Friend, a former director of photography at Life and currently editor of creative development at Vanity Fair, has written the stories behind 50 of the iconic images from 9/11. These are told in a lyric, poetic way by a brilliant writer, making for a powerful book. |

I Can't Believe I'm Buying This Book: A Commonsense Guide to Successful Internet Dating
by Evan Marc Katz

This is a sharply funny guide to internet dating and how to make it work for you. Katz reviews dating sites, marking which sites are the best and why, and tells you how to respond to inquiries, how not to turn people off, and most importantly, how do best express yourself, not just your interests. Excellent and funny (in a good way). |
|
Portrait of the Dog as a Young Artist: Art from Scratch, by the World's Preeminent Canine Painter
by F. Bowman Hastie

This is part real, part set piece, and lots of fun. Tilly is a Jack Russell Terrier, a painter, with several shows to her credit, and a sculptor, specializing in deconstructed objects. Aided by her curator, F. Bowman Hastie III who has documented her talent, this is a fun send-up of conceptual art, but also quite fabulous. |

Character Studies: Encounters with the Curiously Obsessed
by Mark Singer

A new collection of short pieces by a great writer from The New Yorker. These are interviews with unique Americans who are truly and creatively obsessed from sleight-of-hand master Ricky Jay, to Donald Trump and Martin Scorcese, to a devoted fan of the cowboy star Tom Mix. A wonderful collection of profiles and a fascinating exploration of obsessions. |
