 ROXANNE'S PICKS:

Willful Creatures
by Amy Bender

A collection of short stories which are all surrealistic and totally unrelated. They're all whacky, but they're about something that feels powerfully real and emotional. Bender is a genius! |
 |
Ambulance Girl
by Jane Stern

This was recently a Lifetime movie and a book that I've talked about before. In dealing with a deep depression, Jane decides to become an EMT. She tells the story in such a funny, casual way that it feels like she's talking to you like a friend. |
 |
Random Family
by Nicole LeBlanc
A ten year study of 2 girls living in the Bronx. The purpose is to report on what it's like to be a girl in one of the poorest parts of the country, and where does there life take them. This book has no judgment and it really tells you what that world is like. |
 |
Lipstick Jungle
by Candace Bushnell

This may be a testament to my shallowness, but I really liked it. Extremely entertaining and she's a great storyteller. It's the story about 3 very successful women, who are very ambitious and don't need really men – the opposite of Sex and the City. |

LEE'S PICKS:
 |
Beethoven
by J.W.N. Sullivan

Published in 1927, this book is for people who really love music. It's about Beethoven's soul, his spiritual development as a conductor. |
|
 |
Three Soldiers
by John dos Pasos

Published in 1921, a book about three soldiers. This is not an anti-war story, but the real part of the book takes place when the war is over. |
|
 |
Candide
by Voltaire

This is a gruesome tale of war in 1725, which still holds up today. This is the kind of book that you should read as a young person, middle-aged person and as an old person. A phenomenal book that you could read in less than 2 hours. |

ROSE'S PICKS:
 |
The Accidental Tourist
by Ann Tyler

The story is about a travel book writer in Baltimore, Macon. The story is filled with irony. What's wonderful about this book is that she turns Macon's life upside down. |
 |
Gilead
by Marilynne Robinson

This book is so precious. Centers on a 76 year old minister who finds out that he's dying. He has a 7 year old son and he's afraid that his son won't really know him, so he begins writing his lifestory. |
|
 |
A Map of the World
by Jane Hamilton

A riveting story of how a single mistake can change the life of so many people. |

The Last Refuge
by Chris Knopf

The author lives in Connecticut and Southampton. The story centers around a corporate drop-out, Sam, who has abandoned his friends and career and winds up living back with his parents. The lady next door mysteriously dies and Sam tries to figure out what actually happened. A great mystery story. |
 |
How Not to Get Rich
by Robert Sullivan

This is an adorable, funny book. Very hilarious. |
 |
Fields of Gold
by Marie Bostwick

What would happen to a young girl if Charles Lindberg lands in her backyard? This is a great story of fact and fiction. |
 |
Complicity
by Anne Farrow, Joel Lang, Jenifer Frank

A startling, fascinating book about how the north promoted, prolonged and profited by slavery. Written by 3 journalists from the Hartford Courant. This will be taught in classrooms for decades to come. |
 |
Lets Talk About Sex
by Planned Parenthood
A just-published mystery by a A book for boys and girls from ages 9-12. |
 |
Raising NLD Superstars
by Marcia Brown Rubinstein, Pamela Tanquay

What families with nonverbal learning disabilities need to know about nurturing confident, competent kids. |
 |
My Depression

This is a picture book about the things that happen to people when they're depressed. An unthreatening way for people to identify with depression. |
