THE FAITH MIDDLETON SHOW ON WNPR

Show Date: September 17, 2004

Roxanne's Picks:

Jacques Pepin Fast Food My WayJacques Pepin Fast Food My Way
by Jacques Pepin

A lot of us think of fall as time to start cooking again. Well I love this book! The food photography is beautiful and the recipes are really fast and easy. I made his recipes for endives, tomato and cucumber salad, and his green bean recipe. Great flavorful recipes made very easy.
Wemberly WorriedWemberly Worried
by Kevin Henkes

This is a children's book which is very suited towards somebody starting a new school or school for the first time and is feeling anxious. But I think it's also good for any of our friends who have anxiety in the world.
Orphaned AdultOrphaned Adult
by Mark Angel

This book is actually out of print. What I have found is that it's the only book that addresses the fact that you might be 40 or 50 year old and confronted with the idea of being an orphan. The impact is just as dramatic at this age. My husband was given this when his mother died and someone gave this to him to read. He was so comforted by the book - that somebody understands the way you feel.
The Plot Against AmericaThe Plot Against America
by Phllip Roth

This book is so extraordinary. This is a revisionist historical novel where Charles Lindbergh (who is an isolationist and anti-semite) wins the presidential election beating out Roosevelt. What this shows is how easy it would be for our America to change and how quickly this thinking could take over. A great look at "group mentality". And to top it all off, it has a brilliant ending. This book is coming out late September/early October - everybody should line up and be ready to buy and read this book.
I Remember Nothing More
by Adina Blady Szwajger

This is a holocaust book and I think it's the most powerful one that I have ever read. Written by a nurse in the Warsaw ghetto, this book focuses very much on the ghetto, but also about choices that have to be made in such difficult times. If I were to recommend one book on this topic, it would be this book.

Rose's Picks:
The Teammates: A Portrait of FriendshipThe Teammates: A Portrait of Friendship
by David Halberstam

With the World Series approaching I wanted to talk about this book. This book is about 3 friends of Ted Williams who journey to be with the great baseball player before he dies.
Father Joe: The Man Who Saved My SoulFather Joe: The Man Who Saved My Soul
by Tony Hendra

A sort-of memoir which starts out very funny. The author develops a lifelong relationship with Father Joe whom he meets when he's 14 years old and is a far cry from any Catholic priest that he was used to. This is about Tony's journey through drugs, alcohol, marriage and his attempt to find a relationship with a God in whom he had never believed. Despite the controversy that surrounded this book when it first came out, I still enjoyed it.
Cry, the Beloved CountryCry, the Beloved Country
by Alan Paton

This was recommended to me by the book club at RJ Julia. It's Alan Paton's way of paying homage to South Africa and it single-handedly woke up the international community to the racial injustice in South Africa. This book brought a whole new focus of the secrecy that went on in this country. The focus of the book is on a story of two struggling families in South Africa. But beneath that is so much more - so much, in fact, that South Africa actually becomes a character in the book.
SpiderwebSpiderweb
by Penelope Lively

This is a story about a retiring anthropologist. As an observer of people, she's never allowed herself to be intimate with people until she runs into a widowed husband of an old friend.
TherapyTherapy
by David Lodge

Very funny book about a TV sitcom writer who has everything going for him, but doesn't have contentment. So he goes on a search for it and takes a zig-zag route to finding happiness. As typical with his other books if you dig a lot of deeper, there are a lot of serious issues going on.

Faith's Picks:
An Artful AffairAn Artful Affair
by Corinna Clendenen

Written by a local author from Madison, CT. This is the book about the inner workings of the art world: auction houses, critics, galleries. What makes it so good is that the author has spent much of her real professional life in that world. One of my favorite books this summer.
The Marine Art of Geoff Hunt
by Geoff Hunt

This is a coffee table book by a master painter of the marine world. It includes over 150 paintings and sketches of Hunt's. If you're into marine art and naval history this is a great book for you.
Connecticut: An Explorer's GuideConnecticut: An Explorer's Guide &
Rhode Island

Published by Countryman Press, these guides are very handy even for your own state. I've lived in Connecticut all my life and, as I was going through the guide, I realized all the things I haven't done. They are loaded with things to do, along with phone numbers and open hours of places. Well worth having on your shelf.
Found: The Best Lost, Tossed, and Forgotten Items from Around the WorldFound: The Best Lost, Tossed, and Forgotten Items from Around the World
by Davy Rothbart

Rothbart's magazine is called "Found Magazine" and this is a man who finds and invites others to find discarded pieces of paper that communicate something - for instance a leftover shopping list. His magazine became so popular that he wrote a book. It's quirky and fascinating - a treasury of trash. Funny, poignant, horrifying, it's everything under the sun and makes you realize that everything has a story.
When the Music Stopped: Discovering the MotherWhen the Music Stopped: Discovering the Mother
by Thomas Cottle

The most wonderful book. It's a memoir by Thomas Cottle who is an esteemed professor of education at Boston University. He's written this memoir about his mother who was one of the most famous pianist of her time. This is part sociology, part psychology - but mostly a grown up son trying to understand his mother. And it's also a look at this famous woman, who walks away from it all in the height of her career. She had depression and her psychiatrist attributed it to having a career and not being home with her children only to find that her playing was actually her anti-depressant

Sally's Picks:
Sarah CanarySarah Canary & Sister Noon
both by Karen Joy Fowler

From the author of "Jane Austen Book Club" which I loved, I decided to read her earlier works which deal with science fiction and fantasy - two things which I never read. They are historical and set in the 1800's. Although they are not my thing, they are well written, creative and very imaginative. If you love this kind of writing, you will be thrilled with these two books.
Treacherous Waters: Stories of Sailors in the Clutch of the SeaTreacherous Waters: Stories of Sailors in the Clutch of the Sea
by Tom Lochhaas

Fascinating stories of the sea that are all true. There are all kinds of stories, some are admittedly tragic. They are frightening, thrilling but not the best to read while you're out to sea - save it for a cozy, winter day by the fireplace.
Corruption of Blood
by Robert Tannenbaum

A good mystery that has all the elements of espionage, CIA and FBI. This is about the JFK assassination story, but has many different twists and turns that you believe this theory could have happened. The author was a former deputy chief counsel on the house select committee during the assassination, so he had first hand involvement in this topic.
MiddlesexMiddlesex
by Jeffrey Euginedes

Winner of Puliter Prize in 2002. This is one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. It grabs you right from the beginning. It is an incredible story of a woman who reveals her family's secrets that has been buried for years.
