"My book buddies, Roxanne Coady of R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT, Dr. Rose Quiello, lecturer in English at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, and enthusiastic reader Sally Gessner join me in the studio every two weeks. Occasionally Lee Jacobis, author and former professor at the University of Connecticut, drops in as well.

We tell you about the books we've enjoyed recently, and listeners are invited to tell us about your favorite books on line. E-mail us at faithwnpr@aol.com. Tell us in a couple of sentences about an all-time favorite book, or a recent great read, and why you love it. Adults and children are welcome! We'll read your letters over the air."

ROXANNE'S PICKS:
Essential Guide for Email A Woman in Charge
by by Carl Bernstein

I loved this study of Hillary Clinton - it gave me a different understanding of a complex and fascinating woman. Bernstein presents a very neutral view with just enough gossip to make it interesting, and includes a number of interviews with those who know her well - many of them done before she was a presidential candidate. An important book in this pre-election year.
Temples and Palaces Missing Alice: In Search of a Mother's Voice
by Susan Letzler Cole

Written by an Albertus Magnus professor, this is a memoir of Cole's mother, and their relationship, through letters, history and diaries. What is great about it is that it is a wonderful portrait of a "regular" person - it celebrates the day-to-dayness of growing up, and the impact that one person can have in just an ordinary life.

ROSE'S PICKS:
Temples and Palaces This Boy's Life: A Memoir
by Tobias Wolff

This is the memoir that turned me on to memoirs! One of my favorites. The story of Wolff's growing up in the 50's, moving with his mom from state to state, getting into trouble and then re-inventing himself. Moving, passionate, and honest - with wonderful writing. (Great to read along with a memoir written by his brother, Geoffrey, Duke of Deception: Memories of My Father, ISBN-13: 9780679727521).
The Teammates Snow Falling on Cedars
by David Guterson

This mystery is set on a small island of the coast of Washington shortly after World War II. When a murder takes place, the racial tensions between Japanese and whites explode, and the hostility is on both sides. A haunting novel - you won't forget it.

LEE'S PICKS:
On Beauty The Canon: A Whirligig Tour of the Beautiful Basics of Science
by Natalie Angiere

This is a wonderful book - chapters on physics, chemistry, geology, scientific thinking, evolutionary biology, astronomy, among others. Angiere brings the reader - adult readers -- up to speed on what is happening in contemporary science. The chapter on astronomy blew my mind - the numbers were astounding. Occasionally her writing gets a little cute in attempting to make it understandable, but overall she is brilliant!
The JFK Assassination Debates: On The Wealth of Nations
by P. J. O'Rourke

One of the first titles in Atlantic Monthly Press' "Books That Changed the World" series, (or perhaps 'books that are important that you never read'), this is written by a noted satirist. The Wealth of Nations, by Adam Smith, was published in 1776, and is extremely long and weighty, but it is the basis of our economy. O'Rourke summarizes its main principles and explains why they are important in an approachable, witty, and insightful way.

FAITH'S PICKS:
The Merlot Murders Away
by Amy Bloom

A breath-taking book from the well-known short story writer - one of the best novels I've read in years. The story of Lillian Leyb, who comes to America after her family is destroyed in a Russian pogrom. Involved in the Yiddish theatre in NY, she hears that her daughter might still be alive, and she sets off on a remarkable journey of discovery. The writing is gorgeous, the story fabulous - this is a sensational book that matters.
The Dog Ate It The Art Thief
by Noah Charney

A thriller set in Rome, Paris, and London where three masterpieces have vanished. Written by a renowned researcher into crimes in the art world, Charney is incredibly knowledgeable - so this is the best art mystery I've read. A fascinating glimpse into the world of stolen art and the personalities involved.
Saints Behaving Badly Saints Behaving Badly:
by Sophie Gee

Set in the early 1700s, this new novel has Alexander Pope as a young man just starting out. Has a Sense and Sensibility feel to it - extremely atmospheric. It's got everything - mystery, romance, and solid writing. I'm loving it!
