ROXANNE'S PICKS:
Essential Guide for Email Letters from Nuremberg:My Father's Narrative of a Quest for Justice
by Christopher Dodd

This is a book for everyone to read - wonderful on three levels. First, it is a love story: Tom Dodd, our former senator, was a prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials and wrote a letter home to his wife every day while he was involved in the cases. Second, this is the only extemporaneous account of the trials, told while they were occurring. And third, it is a powerful reminder of the civility of justice. This is great writing, and a great piece of history.
Temples and Palaces Exit Ghost
by Philip Roth

I'm not an unqualified fan of Roth's - sometimes I think he is a genius and sometimes a bore, but this is the last Nathan Zuckerman book and I felt I had to read it. It is a bit self-indulgent but still an exquisite and poignant tale about aging as Zuckerman decides to give the city one last try after years of living in relative seclusion in the Berkshires. I didnÕt love it, but I was glad to have read it.
Boomsday When Panic Attacks: The New, Drug-Free Anxiety Therapy That Can Change Your Life
by David D. Burns

More and more people today seem to be having panic attacks. This book presents pragmatic behavior modification techniques to begin to deal with them. While it probably helps just to know that you are not alone in experiencing them, this book provides a good transitional step in dealing with them.
How I Write Education's End: Why Our Colleges and Universities Have Given up on the Meaning of Life
by Anthony T. Kronman

Written by a former dean of Yale Law School and now a professor in the Directed Studies Program, this is a history of how educational institutions have given up on the idea that the meaning of life is a teachable moment. Lives of fulfillment are as important as successful careers, he argues, and it is not to late to read and explore. (He provides a reading list in the back from YaleÕs Directed Studies Program.) Inspiring!

ROSE'S PICKS:
Looking Beyond the Ivy League:Finding the College that is Right for You
by Loren Pope

This is an extremely worthwhile book for high school students searching for colleges Ð and their parents. It discusses the strengths and weaknesses of colleges, other than ivy league, and how to find one that is a good 'fit'; whether it is valuable to take a year off before college; what is important in an admission essay Ð and other essentials in the college application process. I highly recommend it.
The Teammates Charming Billy
by Alice McDermott

Opening at the premature funeral of Billy Lynch, charming, alcoholic, and self-destructive, this is the story of his life, and, more importantly, the reminiscences of his friends and family. McDermott pays close attention to the details and small traces of affection that occur between Billy and his friends. This is a simple book in plot, but gifted writing makes it powerful, intelligent and sensitive.
Small Wonder God In All Worlds:An Anthology of Contemporary Spiritual Writing
edited by Lucinda Vardley

A series of 22 essays written over the past 50 years by a variety of people Ð Albert Einstein, the Dalai Lama, Alan Ginsberg, Germaine Greet Ð and representing a range of traditions and beliefs. This is a book for anyone searching for their spiritual nature. An inspiring book, perfect for your beside table Ð or for a holiday gift.

LEE'S PICKS:
On Beauty Echo Park
by Michael Connelly

The latest Harry Bosch murder mystery Ð here he is living on the edge and trying to track down a murderer from 15 years earlier. And incidentally, this time the publisher has all sorts of ploys to make Harry real Ð you can check him out on YouTube or call his voice mail at 323-244-5631! This book is a must for Bosch fans Ð complex and subtle.
The JFK Assassination Debates: The Maytrees
by by Annie Dillard

The story of Toby Maytree, a Cape Cod poet, and his life with Lou Bigelow, his first love and wife. A story of love and longing, rich and extraordinary but with a certain sadness. Dillard excels in portraying touching characters but with a wonderful strangeness. Skeletal storytelling, but good, deeply sensuous writing.
The Aeneid The Aeneid
by Virgil, translated by Robert Fitzgerald

A wonderful translation of Virgil's saga of Rome's origins. Written during the golden age of Augustan Rome, and based on Homer's Odyssey and Illiad, this is the epic tale of Aeneus, his journey from Troy, and the founding of Rome. Of the many versions, FitzgeraldÕs is the best with an elegant sense of language.

FAITH'S PICKS:
The Merlot Murders The Merlot Murders: A Wine Country Mystery
by Ellen Crosby

One of the wine country series, this mystery is set in the vineyards of Virginia. It's a fun read Ð and filled with information on the history (since Jeffersonian times) and science of winemaking in Virginia.
The Dog Ate It Miss Crandall's School for Young Ladies and Little Misses of Color: Poems
by Elizabeth Alexander and Marilyn Nelson

The story of Miss Crandall's boarding school for girls in Canterbury CT is told here in sonnet form. When, in the 1830s, Crandall decided to allow African-American girls to enroll in her classes, the town became enraged, causing her finally to leave town. The town eventually acknowledged their error, and the school is now a museum. Written for young adults, but appropriate for all and beautifully illustrated by Floyd Cooper.
Saints Behaving Badly Saints Behaving Badly: The Cutthroats, Crooks, Trollops, Con Men, and Devil-Worshippers Who Became Saints
by Thomas J. Craughwell

This chronicles the lives of saints before they became saints Ð truly an impressive group of rogues. Craughwell, a Catholic columnist, gives the stories behind a most-wanted list of sinners that eventually transformed their lives. This gives you hope that you can be truly flawed and still do great things!
