"My book buddies, Roxanne Coady of R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT, Dr. Rose Quiello, lecturer in English at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, and enthusiastic reader Sally Gessner join me in the studio every two weeks. Occasionally Lee Jacobis, author and former professor at the University of Connecticut, drops in as well.

We tell you about the books we've enjoyed recently, and listeners are invited to tell us about your favorite books on line. E-mail us at faithwnpr@aol.com. Tell us in a couple of sentences about an all-time favorite book, or a recent great read, and why you love it. Adults and children are welcome! We'll read your letters over the air."

Show Date: November 24th, 2006
 ROXANNE'S PICKS:

The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11
by Lawrence Wright

Another 9/11 book, just published this fall. This one is remarkable, non-political, and reads like a novel because Wright focuses on the people involved - two terrorists and two of the men who tracked them. He weaves the riveting - and alarming - story of how it came about and how much we actually knew before the fact.
|
 |
Historical Atlas of the United States
by Derek Hayes

I could spend the next 10 years with this book - a real book of genius. Hayes tells the story of how this country developed from a unique geographical perspective - based on over 500 historic maps. Fascinating, handsome, and the most exciting way of presenting history - a great holiday present. |
 |
Jamie's Italy
by Jamie Oliver

This is a recommendation that comes through my niece Becca - a great cookbook from the Naked Chef, with wonderfully evocative photographs, and the type of recipes that are simple but loaded with great flavors. |
 |
Man and Camel
by Mark Strand

Liquid and transparent poems about loss and transience - reading this new collection makes you think and feel differently. The beauty of the language, combined with something profound but undefinable, makes these an absolute pleasure. |
 |
I Feel Bad about My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman
by Nora Ephron

I talked about this book earlier (see September 15th show), but want to add that one of the things that makes this so good is the light-hearted, but serious questions that Ephron asks at the end of the book (triggered by her friend's death) about how to live the rest of your life. |
 |
Adele & Simon
by Barbara McClintock

Adele picks Simon up from school, and on the way home he loses everything! Illustrated with charming old-fashioned pen and ink drawings of Paris, the reader has to help Simon find all of his belongings. A beautiful and delicious children's book. |

LEE'S PICKS:
 |
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
by Jonathan Safran Foer

This is the story of 9-year-old Oskar Schell, whose father dies in the 9/11 bombings, and his odyssey to find the lock that fits a mysterious key of his dad's. The author has an astounding ability to capture the voice and essence of this precocious child and the fable that surrounds him. Well told and compelling. |
|
 |
Brideshead Revisited
by Evelyn Waugh

A brilliant book, with a deep, profound literary reward. This is a memory book - the story of Charles Ryder, billeted in a great English manor house where he had spent time as a child. This was the basis of the popular PBS series, and if you were addicted to the show, you will love the book. |
|
 |
The Young Apollo and Other Stories
by Louis Auchincloss

A collection of 12 remarkably good short stories, told in a somewhat 'Jamesian' manner, by the prolific 90-year old author (and noted NYC litigator). The title work explores the effect that a young man who died early had on those around him. |
|
 |
Without: Poems
by Donald Hall

Without are poems Hall, the Poet Laurate of the U.S., wrote as a record and reaction to the death of his beloved wife. Some of them are included in his latest anthology of poems from the past sixty years. Wonderful pieces by one of America's most eminent poets. |
|

|
 |
Treasure Island
by Robert Louis Stevenson

Stevenson has been getting a lot of press lately, so I went back to reread this - and it is an enchanted read from beginning to end, with indelible characters and beautiful writing. This is a book for both children and adults. |

The History of Love
by Nicole Krauss

I'm only half-way through this book, but have to mention it because it is remarkable, and I am racing though it. It opens with the remembrances of an old man and cycles around to the past and back again to the present. The writing is amazing and the story is enthralling, and I will update you again when I finish it (Roxanne thinks it is one of the best recent works of fiction.) |

 |
A Time to Run
by Barbara Boxer and Mary-Rose Hayes

A first novel by the senator from California, this is a terrific story of 2 young activists who fall in love, and become involved in children and politics. Fast-paced and knowledgeable - I liked this one a lot. |
|
 |
Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Book
by Dierdre Dolan

If you are a fan of Larry Davis' show on HBO - Curb Your Enthusiasm - than this is the book for you. It offers a behind-the-scenes look at the people, experiences, and stories connected to the hit show. |
