A New York Times "10 Best Books of 2009" Pick
This superb, powerful, beautifully imagined novel continues to resonate with me months after I finished it. I was swept along by McCann's masterfully constructed narrative, in which very different lives overlap and intersect in unexpected ways, in NYC in the summer of 1974. Winner of the 2009 National Book Award, and a must-read!

William Trevor will always be the king, the prince, the genius of fiction for me. Stunningly, heartbreakingly real with the classic Trevor style that always, always leaves me breathless.

Big, fat and brilliant, Wolf Hall deservedly topped many best lists of 2009 and won the Man Booker Award for fiction. This view of Henry VIII and his bevy of beauties and chaotic court is narrated by Thomas Cromwell. Here we see Cromwell as the sage, brilliant lawyer, negotiator and manipulator. Hilary Mantel has long been on my list of favorite authors – and with this book she is getting the attention she deserves. Take your time with it. Relish her ability to tell a story and you will be handsomely rewarded.

A real stunner of a book in so many respects - exquisite writing, haunting story, flawed but wonderful characters. What else needs to be said?- Kathryn

There is nothing better than a dysfunctional British family (see Evelyn Waugh). This engrossing, brilliant book woke me up at 4am, saying, "I could read for just half an hour and still get some sleep." While I wouldn't want to go drinking with the Wellwoods, I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the home of this wonderfully crazed family.- Nancy
