I was hooked from the first sentence. This maddening, exhilarating, wonderful novel drove me crazy because I wanted to tear through it, so mesmerized was I by Spooner and his family. Dexter's writing doesn't allow this race to the finish though, as he compels the reader to savor each word, sentence, paragraph, and page. Some of the writing brought stabs of recognition so intense that I felt like I was there with Spooner in his life (or he in mine). The best book I've read in a long, long time.- Peggy
