Marketing and Events Assistant

R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT is looking to fill a position in our Marketing and Events Department. If hired, you'll be joining a very special group of people who are passionate about books and providing top-notch service to our loyal customers.

We are seeking an organized, responsible, creative, and dynamic problem-solver to join our talented team of book lovers.

Position:

The R.J. Julia Booksellers Events and Marketing Assistant will support the department, assuming a dynamic public relations role on behalf of R.J. Julia to positively maintain mutually beneficial relationships with publishers, authors, media personnel, the local community, and other key contacts by completing the following tasks:

  • execute promotional newsletter mailings and e-mailings

  • distribute press releases and event listings to local media sources

  • social media networking and growing networks – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest

  • website maintenance - addition of events to online calendar, addition of titles to Staff Suggestions area of website, general as-needed maintenance

  • creation of in-store event signage and displays, confirm/distribute internal marketing and event communications to staff, assist with creation of monthly print Events calendar

  • run reports as needed

Required Qualifications:

• Computer Skills:  Applicants must be competent in Microsoft Office and all social media applications. Experience with Constant Contact is preferred but not necessary.

• Writing Skills:  Write press releases, create flyers and signage, editing and proofing.

• Multi-tasking: This position includes a variety of tasks, so being able to multi-task is important.

• Book Lover: Since we're in the business of books, ideal applicants will share our enthusiasm for the business and maintain an awareness of industry happenings.

R.J. Julia Booksellers Event Host

R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT is looking for an organized, responsible, creative and dynamic problem-solver to join our talented team of Event Hosts.

Event Hosts set up and host author readings, book signings and/or a variety of adult and children’s events.

DescriptionThis position is responsible for event management.  There are approximately 200+ events executed each year ranging from 15-300+ participants.

Responsibilities:

·         Event set-up and breakdown:

o   Set up folding chairs and moving furniture as necessary

o   Set up AV equipment if necessary

·         Author Services:

o   Greet author upon their arrival

o   Provide the author with an overview of the event

o   Show them the area where the event will take place

o   Offer them coffee/tea/refreshments, show them where the restroom is

o   Introduce the author with a brief biography and thanking guests for coming

o   Manage the signing line, photographs, etc

·         Audience Services:

o   Greet customers as they arrive and collect tickets, if necessary

o   Make sure prepaid books are picked up

o   Direct customers to the event space

·         Administrative Duties:

o   Take photos during event

o   Have author sign copies for stock

o   Have author sign pre-orders for customers not in attendance

o   Track book sales

o   Track attendance

o   Provide the author with a gift book

o   Compose a thank you note to the author

HoursPer Diem; days, nights and weekends, no more than 7 hours/week

Compensation$9.60/hour

Marketing and Events Internship

Position: The R.J. Julia Booksellers intern will be involved in a wide variety of Marketing & Promotions tasks, which include assisting with:

• author events

• in-store displays

• promotional mailings

• flyer distribution

• press releases

• social media networking

Though the position will include a number of administrative tasks, we welcome our interns to shape their experience here according to their specific interests and talents. In addition to general assignments, we also encourage each intern to design a long-term project based on their unique skills and passions. Interns work 6-9 hours/week (flexible hours, Monday-Friday).

Qualifications:

Computer Skills: Applicants must be competent in Microsoft Word and Excel, Facebook and Twitter, and would ideally be familiar with Pinterest, Microsoft Publisher and Photoshop.

Writing Skills: Interns may be asked to write press releases, draft letters to area organizations, create flyers, etc.

Multi-tasking: This position includes a variety of tasks, so being able to multi-task is important.

Book Lover: Since we're in the business of books, ideal applicants will share our enthusiasm for the business.

High School and College students only, please.
