R.J. Julia Booksellers is currently looking to fulfill the following position: Communications Intern and Event Host.

 

R.J. Julia Booksellers’ Communications Intern

 

Description: As one of the premiere independent bookstores in the country, R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT is looking for a Video Communications intern to join the store’s Events & Marketing team. In this position, the intern will work hands-on with local public access television equipment to film and record select events, edit footage as applicable, design intro and outro cards, and help facilitate the archival process of the store’s programming.

 

Responsibilities:

·      Safely manage a video camera and equipment to ensure smooth and seamless video of select R.J. Julia events, both in-store and off-site

·         Edit footage as the Events Manager and/or Marketing Manager sees fit

·         Design intro and outro cards for public broadcast

·         Upload video footage onto the store’s YouTube account for website placement

 

Qualifications:

·         Prior experience using television equipment is a plus, but not necessary (*Note: a one-hour orientation from the Madison Public Access station manager is required before internship begins)

·         Previous experience or internship in Marketing and Communications

·         Computer literate

·         Experience with Drupal website management is a plus, but not required

·         Responsible, on-time, understands that they are a representative of R.J. Julia both in-store and off-site at events

·         Flexible schedule

 

Hours: Evening hours (usually from 6-8:30 pm) are required. Flexibility in schedule is a must.

 

Compensation: This is an unpaid internship, but college credit can be received.

R.J. Julia Booksellers’ Event Host

R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT is looking for an organized, responsible, creative and dynamic problem-solver to join our talented team of Event Hosts.

Event Hosts set up and host author readings, book signings and/or a variety of adult and children’s events.

Description: This position is responsible for event management.  There are approximately 200+ events executed each year ranging from 15-300+ participants.

Responsibilities:

·         Event set-up and breakdown:

o   Set up folding chairs and moving furniture as necessary

o   Set up AV equipment if necessary

·         Author Services:

o   Greet author upon their arrival

o   Provide the author with an overview of the event

o   Show them the area where the event will take place

o   Offer them coffee/tea/refreshments, show them where the restroom is

o   Introduce the author with a brief biography and thanking guests for coming

o   Manage the signing line, photographs, etc

·         Audience Services:

o   Greet customers as they arrive and collect tickets, if necessary

o   Make sure prepaid books are picked up

o   Direct customers to the event space

·         Administrative Duties:

o   Take photos during event

o   Have author sign copies for stock

o   Have author sign pre-orders for customers not in attendance

o   Track book sales

o   Track attendance

o   Provide the author with a gift book

o   Compose a thank you note to the author

Hours: Per Diem; days, nights and weekends, no more than 7 hours/week

Compensation: $8.70/hour
