Our Shelf Talker
To my surprise, I couldn’t put this down-this goes in the category of learning what it is like to live in another’s shoes--not shoes we want to wear but important to understand Madame de Stael an early independent female -full of passion, wit and courage, a force of nature in Napoleonic France. She held the limelight as a philospher, political figure and prolific writer--What a character to spend some hours with-I was intrigued and charmed and enlightened. Perfect for bookclubs or a quiet afternoon.- Roxanne
Description
Of political and intellectual prominence, the daughter of Jacques Necker and the wife of Sweden's ambassador to the French court, Madame de Staël held the limelight as a philosopher, political figure, and prolific writer. She was demonized by Napoleon for her forthrightness, her intellect, and her progressive salon. Force of nature and ultimate enthusiast, Madame de Staël struggled against all that was tyrannical or passionless in her time, leaving Europe a legacy of enlightened liberalism.
