R.J. Julia Booksellers R.J. Julia Selects Book for
Good Morning America
Dear Reader,

About a month ago, Good Morning America called asking if we would help them relaunch their book club -- Read This -- by selecting the book for September. They wanted a book that was a great read, would appeal to all types of readers, and would generate dynamic discussion on lots of topics. So we were excited, challenged, and honored. I spent much of my vacation in Maine plowing through dozens of books. Plus our amazing booksellers plowed through dozens more.

Someone Not Really Her Mother This morning, Good Morning America unveiled our pick: Harriet Scott Chessman's Someone Not Really Her Mother.

Harriet has been a favorite of R.J. Julia's for years, and she used to be a Madison resident (she now lives in California).

The book tracks three generations of women, the oldest of whom is suffering from Alzheimerís. Much of the book is told from her perspective, and her fractured memories create a nuanced and evocative portrait of what really matters in life. Even through the fog of her disease, we see the strength of this woman and the way her life -- her suffering, her love, her commitment to family -- continues to influence even her newborn great-grandson. Debbie, one of our booksellers, describes the novel beautifully: "This little gem is what I call a "velvet steamroller." You know you've received a powerful punch - but delivered with gentleness, beauty, and intimacy."

Harriet's novel is lyrical and powerful, and combines "unspeakable grief and insistent hope." Above all, it is a story about the power of love. We are so proud to have brought it to the attention of Good Morning America.

Harriet will be here in November and then we can celebrate and, most important, get to discuss the book.

Happy reading -- see you in the store.
