Elizabeth Brundage has a knowing, smart wise eye for writing about two inextricably linked families-joined by tragedy and small town life. Her writing, this story, with its element of mystery, its attention to the arc of lives and the way in which it reveals our  capacity for kindness in the midst of adversity mesmerized me.  When Anna Quindlen was here she  mentioned this book, "All Things Cease to Appear" as her top book for the summer—I utterly and totally agree.  -Roxanne

We all know these women or at least we wish we did.  The grand dame of your book club, the mousey wife of your family doctor, the young women speckling your neighborhood block party; the “housewife” trope is as American as apple pie, and this books serves them up with a twist. Hysterical, well written and oddly relatable, these women wear pearls, boke pies, and murder their doormen.  From the haunted halls of a pre-war New York apartment, to the set of a rigged reality TV show, or the initiation of a rather sinister book club, the women of these stories fulfill all your sordid expectations and then some.  A pointed commentary on womanhood, American Housewife is as delicious as the meals Ellis’ ladies serve up.  —Jaclyn

When the plot of the book is about a private jet crashing for no good reason, you know it’s going to be a page turner for sure!  I couldn’t get through fast enough for the answers.  As I learned more about each character on board, my target suspect kept changing!  To balance the suspense, you get the story of the two unrelated survivors answering the question of “what next?” Very well written, a bit quirky and touching all at the same time!   -Lori

Lauren Groff has done it again.  Complex characters and beautiful language set the stage for this emotional story of a marriage over decades- the ups, the downs, their hopes and dreams- some dashed, some realized.   Struggling artists in a sometimes struggling marriage, wondering Kids or No Kids? Are these true friends or enemies? And what of family with ulterior motives?  Just when you think it’s heading one way, Groff hits you with the FURIES half of the book.  Brilliant and by far, one of my new all-time favorites.  — Liz

"Homegoing" is not only a wonderfully written book that has great storytelling, but it is a book that is able to show how issues that still plague us today are routed in evil from long ago. Yaa Gyasi does an incredible job weaving her story through generations. We watch the extremely different paths two sisters are pulled to and how each impacts their family line in ways unimaginable.  —Lori

It isn't easy to get funny right, but for my money Gina Barreca gets funny better than most anyone writing.  In her new book If You Lean In, Will Men Just Look Down Your Blouse?, she expounds on issues both mundane (Spandex) and profound (love) using both poignant personal examples and the sharpest of wit to skewer the ridiculous, the over earnest and dishonest that we all cope with too frequently.  This is perfect reading for those who want to smile, laugh, and ponder the world of womanhood.  Having Gina as our sage, crazy guide will leave you wiser, happier, and more equipped! — Roxanne

Not your traditional biography. This book examines the forces that shaped James Brown and continue to shape the American experience. One of the most important musicians of all time deserves a bio by one of America’s great writers. I can’t get enough of Brown by McBride. Amazing.  — Andrew

There is a hypnotic and purely mesmerizing strangeness to the voice of Lucy Barton.  Fans of “Oliver Kittridge” and “The Burgess Boys” will not be disappointed in this accounting of a woman’s life.  From a difficult childhood of poverty and abuse to a place of forgiveness and deliverance, the memories of Lucy begin and center on a five day visit from her estranged mother as Lucy recovers in a 1980s New York hospital.  Those memories expand in a dreamlike way from that platform.  Lucy Barton briefly and curiously connects us to so many mother-daughter and family issues that most readers will be able to recognize and reflect upon.  Reads quickly but will resonate for quite awhile.   –Barb

OMG!  This is the best book I have read in a long time.  It's the 1960’s and a young teen going through rough times, due to bullying and her parents' divorce, joins a "Manson-like" cult occupying a dilapidated ranch near her home. The results are chilling.  If you remember the Manson murders (or even if you don't) you will be spellbound by this story and the look into the psyche of a young person being attracted by the charisma of the leader and the dark, dark setting.  — Val S
