A Note from Brian, RJ Julia's Adult Book Buyer:

Allow us to introduce you to a few debut darlings as well as some old pros!

First up is non-fiction: Prior to her untimely death in 2016, Michelle McNamara spent the last 30 years hard at work researching and writing her first and, sadly, only book. Then there’s Robert Kurson, who has been delighting history buffs since his ever-popular Shadow Divers was published in 2004. And let’s not forget Timothy Snyder, author of the vital and seemingly unstoppable On Tyranny – he’s been a major voice in history and politics for decades.

On the fiction side, we have the always reliable and inimitably creepy Josh Malerman, followed by Jane Delury, whose debut is already garnering heaps of praise from the likes of Kirkus and Publishers Weekly. Last, but surely not least, is one of my favorites, Richard Flanagan, a seasoned master of his craft capable of writing a sentence that could stop a freight train in its tracks.

Next time you're in the store, be sure to ask a bookseller about books - new and old - from these authors!

I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer Cover Image

I'll Be Gone in the Dark

by Michelle McNamara

I've been on a mystery streak of late, thrilling in that AHA! moment when the killer is revealed. Would a true crime book, so unresolved that the author even dies before completion, work for me? Yes!

Read Sharon's review.

Rocket Men: The Daring Odyssey of Apollo 8 and the Astronauts Who Made Man's First Journey to the Moon Cover Image

Rocket Men

by Robert Kurson

This fascinating book takes readers back to the beginning of the lesser known, and by far the riskiest, mission to the moon - Apollo 8. Kurson’s latest is incredibly well researched and packed with surprising facts.

Read Lynette's review.

The Road to Unfreedom: Russia, Europe, America Cover Image

The Road to Unfreedom

by Timothy Snyder

Snyder's latest book reads like an intellectual true crime novel! The Road to Unfreedom is a well-researched, contemporary history explaining how our world has lost its way and providing a road map to getting back on track.

Read Jamie's review.

The Balcony Cover Image

The Balcony

by Jane Delury

Elegantly written and extremely insightful of the human condition, The Balcony dives deeply into the lives of the residents of a manor house and caretaker’s cottage located in a tiny village near Paris over the course of 100 years.

Read Marlene's review.

Unbury Carol Cover Image

Unbury Carol

by Josh Malerman

Malerman has already proven himself to be an original thinker (see his first novel, Bird Box) and now he has outdone himself. This one is like an Edgar Allan Poe story set in the old West!

Read Mary's review.

First Person Cover Image

First Person

by Richard Flanagan

Blending his characteristically stunning prose with a palpable sense of danger found in the best thrillers, Flanagan has crafted an emotional, chilling, and darkly comic parable for our age of alternative facts.

A Note from Jamie, RJ Julia's Kids' Book Buyer:

When I see exotic plants and animals, I can barely believe they are real.

Many new books, like those exotic creatures, are feasts for our imaginations. Artwork from around the world has left us gasping. Nuanced characters from other cultures become as familiar as friends in the house next door.

Kids will return to these books again and again! Welcome to the jungle!
