Staff Reviews

Flying under the radar, this book is a must read for anyone. With his tongue-in-cheek wit, Wilson’s tale reflects on who we are today and how we got here. Laugh out loud with this one, because if you don’t, you might burst into flames.

— Terri

With both fantasy and reality... yes, just go with it, you will be both moved and entertained by this insightful book about loyalty, parenting, and self-worth.

— Andie

If you need a book to recommend, try Nothing to See Here! It engages right from the start despite the odd premise. For fans of smart, contemporary fiction. As an added bonus, it has a great cover!

— Alicia (Laura's extremely well-read, librarian sister)

"Hi Roxanne. Listen, I'm going to be late today. I know, but I'm reading Nothing to See Here and I can't put it down, it's just so great! Yes, the one where the kids burst into flames when they get upset. No, I don't know why. The stepmother hires an old 'frenemy' to keep them out of sight. Yes, very funny, but also so poignant. Sure, you get it next!"

— Sharon

Kevin Wilson certainly has an imagination and wit. This seemingly preposterous story has lessons for us, and along the way, we get to read a rollicking tale that had me glued to the book.

— Roxanne

After reading author Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s (Fleishman Is in Trouble) rave review of Kevin Wilson’s latest, I had to read it! While I wondered how a novel that includes two children who are able to spontaneously combust would actually work, trust me, it does, and it’s terrific!

— Marilyn

Of course I had to hop on the Nothing to See Here bandwagon and I am so glad I did! This book is simultaneously subversive and a bit bonkers, while being poignant and warm and fuzzy. I was angry, dismayed, touched, and laughing out loud! I dare you to not have your heart crack wide open.

— Julie

Started this book in the morning and did not want to go to work! This has an intriguing story line with twin children that occasionally burst into flames but are not hurt by the fire. Wow! What follows is a story about love, compassion, parenthood, and responsibility, especially when all of these things get in the way of our ambitions and self-interests. Loved it!

November 2019 Indie Next List

“When a politician’s young wife hires her old school friend as a nanny for her two stepchildren, the main duty will be to keep the twins out of sight and out of trouble. That’s because the kids’ father is a senator and under serious consideration to be the next Secretary of State. But what if the children can’t control themselves? Who is the best person to take care of children who are afflicted with spontaneous combustion? Obviously, a woman with no fear of fire, nothing to lose, and nothing to gain. At turns hilarious and heartbreaking, this unique novel explores family dynamics, resentment, and retribution, leaving the reader with a new perspective on motherhood and what it means to be loyal to those you love.”

Description

Kevin Wilson's best book yet--a moving and uproarious novel about a woman who finds meaning in her life when she begins caring for two children with remarkable and disturbing abilities.

Lillian and Madison were unlikely roommates and yet inseparable friends at their elite boarding school. But then Lillian had to leave the school unexpectedly in the wake of a scandal and they've barely spoken since. Until now, when Lillian gets a letter from Madison pleading for her help.

Madison's twin stepkids are moving in with her family and she wants Lillian to be their caretaker. However, there's a catch: the twins spontaneously combust when they get agitated, flames igniting from their skin in a startling but beautiful way. Lillian is convinced Madison is pulling her leg, but it's the truth.

Thinking of her dead-end life at home, the life that has consistently disappointed her, Lillian figures she has nothing to lose. Over the course of one humid, demanding summer, Lillian and the twins learn to trust each other--and stay cool--while also staying out of the way of Madison's buttoned-up politician husband. Surprised by her own ingenuity yet unused to the intense feelings of protectiveness she feels for them, Lillian ultimately begins to accept that she needs these strange children as much as they need her--urgently and fiercely. Couldn't this be the start of the amazing life she'd always hoped for?

With white-hot wit and a big, tender heart, Kevin Wilson has written his best book yet--a most unusual story of parental love.
