Written before the 2016 election, this is both prescient and tremendously informative as to how and why the former working class democrats of the South and Appalchia voted as they did. This is a fascinating, heartbreaking, and telling memoir of a young man who grew up in the proud and damaged world of “hillbilly” culture, and went on to Yale Law School. Vance brings the reader into his fractured home life, where unemployment, drugs, and intractable hopelessness strangles his friends and family. I like the way he speaks intelligently about policy and proposals to deal with this lost section of America.
