Staff Reviews

From Tomi Adeyemi comes a diverse fantasy world, where those who have magic are called maji. But one night, many years ago, magic disappeared, leaving the maji defenseless against a terrible king. But now, Zelie has a chance to bring magic back to the world of Orisha & get revenge for what the king did to her mother & every maji like her. With the help of a runaway princess & her beloved brother, Zelie goes on an epic journey to restore the powers of the maji in an unforgettable tale of romance, betrayal friendship & magic. This story was perfect: the writing, the characters, the world, the diversity & the plot!

— ARC REVIEWER, Bridey M., age 17

An epic journey to save magic and the maji who were supposedly wiped out by a cruel and fearful king. Marked by her white hair, Zélie knows of her maji lineage but is reluctant to accept her role in the journey. Echoes of the authors Nigerian heritage provide atmosphere and substance to this top pick for fantasy lovers.

Spring 2018 Kids’ Indie Next List

“When Zelie was a child, she saw her mother and all magic wiped from existence with a tyrant's single, sweeping order. Now she finds herself tasked with restoring that magic to the land of Orisha, with the aid of her brother and that same tyrant's daughter. As Zelie races against time, she reckons with her newfound abilities and the moral complexities they awaken her to. Adeyemi's debut features truly epic world-building without sacrificing the intimate character development that propels the narrative. Every action combines taut pacing with lucid internal monologue, lending each work of magic or physical blow a palpable emotional weight. Stunning, cinematic, and resonant.”
