A stunning and timely debut novel. What I loved most about this book was the humanity on every single page. I found myself laughing just as much as I found myself tearing up or feeling angry. The story is important and the characters are beautifully written.
Sixteen year old Starr lives two lives. She lives in a rough area surrounded by gang lords, drugs, guns and violence. She goes to school an hour away where she is one of only a few black students. When she witnesses her childhood friend killed by a police officer, Starr's struggle to keep her two selves separate starts to fall apart.
A coming of age novel inspired by Black Lives Matter, The Hate U Give is an important book that everyone should read.
