A searing, satirical indictment of the for-profit prison system, this book absolutely blew me away. Adjei-Brenyah has filled his novel with vivid characters, developing each of their voices so masterfully that you can't help but feel deeply invested in these flawed, complex people. The dystopian setting is recognizable enough to be uncomfortable in its proximity to the world we live in, but with enough space to foster hope for our own societal choices. Not only propulsively plotted, but timely and tender as well- a real feat of literature.

It’s intense, very immersive, and easy to get sucked into completely. I also like that it’s broken into many short chapters like scenes in a movie. You can read one, take a quick dip in the ocean perhaps, then jump right back into the next part of the book.

“Some may read this novel as a dystopian take of our current prison system, but it’s really a version of the reality we are currently living. But make no mistake: there is love and hope in these pages which we could all use right now.”
