Holiday 2018

Dear Reader,

Are you in the mood for perspective, inspiration, and comfort? Looking for a retreat from the world where there is quiet and space to think and day dream, and a place where texts and tweets are on hiatus?  I do believe we can retrieve a more simple way of being, not every day nor all day, but a bit of a day—a way of finding a secret moment.

Alan Lightman, in his book In Praise of Wasting Time, suggests we take 30-minutes every day to do nothing. Take a walk—without your phone, without music—just a walk. A half an hour per day to waste time, he suggests we think of it as a gift to ourselves. (The other book that had me focused on methods to bring sanity back into our lives is Jaron Lanier’s 10 Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now).

For many of us, wandering around a bookstore, soaking up the world of words, is meditative and soothing. All of us have become addicted to the short form—the sound bite. To me, it begins to feel like an assault. But as I picked up books like Jon Meacham’s The Soul of America, Joseph Ellis’ American Dialogue, Jill Lepore’s genius book These Truths, or 21 Lessons for the 21st Century by Yuval Noah Harari, it dawned on me that the long form— the long view— of history, of our times, of humanity, brings the opposite of an assault. It brings calm, thoughtfulness, and reason. It also allows for understanding and compassion, even where there might be disagreement.

What we focused on this year, in selecting books for you to consider as gifts, is to think of those that will bring a smile, a sense of awe, pleasure, insight, or just distraction. The book is a simple object, one that has survived through every major upheaval and every century since the invention of the printing press. There is a reason: it is portable, beautiful, and even magical. What a wonderful gift to a person in your life, one that might afford them the motivation and opportunity for quiet and reflection. That’s not a bad way to let them know you care!

On behalf of the staff of RJ Julia Booksellers, I wish you and your family a time of connection, reflection, and joy.

See you in the store,

Roxanne J. Coady

Founder, RJ Julia Booksellers

P.S. The book I gave myself is the ginormous The New Yorker Encyclopedia of Cartoons, because whoever said it: laughter IS the best medicine!
