Position: Children and Young Adult Events Coordinator

Location: Madison, CT

RJ Julia Booksellers is seeking an energetic, outgoing, and detail-oriented individual to coordinate our children’s events schedule, with the focus being our growing Authors to Schools program

This is a part-time job requiring excellent time management skills to oversee children’s events for two distinct bookstore locations (RJ Julia Booksellers and Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore), as well as working with school districts across the state. 

Our Authors to Schools program brings touring authors and illustrators into schools all over the country, spanning grades pre-K through high school. In addition, we partner with local schools to provide access to in-school and online book fairs.

Therefore, this position is responsible for producing unique, exciting events that represent and extend the RJ Julia brand. This position will continue to innovate and enhance the role kids’ events have provided our customers and publishers for over 30 years.

Responsibilities:

  • Assume a dynamic role on behalf of the store(s) which contributes to positive, mutually beneficial relationships with publishers, authors, school districts and administrations, the local community, and other key contacts.
  • Develop and effectively pitch event concepts/proposals to publishers, authors, and schools, ensuring that the store offers unique programming that is timely, engaging, and that sets RJ Julia apart from its competitors.
  • Produce dynamic, innovative, sales-producing events.
  • Present events in a style that provides a unique customer experience, inspiring loyalty and return visits from customers; attract new visitors to the store(s).
  • Communicate with publishers, publicists, authors, events staff, and local event partners to coordinate ALL the details of any given event.
  • Develop and execute all event activities: make various co-sponsoring and/or venue arrangements; work closely with Buying and Marketing departments; oversee in-store merchandising specific to events; host events as needed; track results.
  • Re-confirm events with publishers, determine all author needs (travel arrangements, meals, other preferences), collect attendee data for marketing purposes, and manage book inventory pre-and-post event.
  • Plan and implement events within established budget guidelines, report and present to the Leadership Team regularly.
  • Comfortably speak in front of large crowds to introduce authors or key industry personnel.
  • Maintain a calm demeanor when confronted with challenges.
  • Maintain confidentiality and strict discretion when working with high-profile authors and speakers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and computer skills along with highly effective writing skills.  
  • Results driven; focused on meeting and exceeding expectations.
  • In-depth understanding of the store's philosophy, branding, overall goals, and events-related service and marketing objectives.
  • Publishing industry knowledge a plus.
  • Effective organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to think creatively and select or recommend events independent of multiple outside requests.
  • Ability to work closely with and take direction from the Leadership team.
  • Proficient computer skills: MS Office (particularly Excel); internet; e-mail and content management systems, Square POS system, Zoom virtual conferencing.
  • Provide constructive feedback on how the Store(s) might be improved; attend or initiate meetings, as required; volunteer support, whenever possible.

Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore 

Position: Lead Bookseller/Key Holder

Location: Middletown, CT

The lead bookseller role is a key holding position within our store. Job responsibilities will include opening and closing the store. A bookseller in this role is expected to lead by example for the rest of our team, exemplifying excellence in customer engagement and service. Our booksellers are the heart and soul of the bookstore. If hired, you'll be joining a very special group of people who are passionate about books and providing top-notch service to our loyal customers.

Our booksellers are dynamic and energetic with a love of books; customer service oriented; have the ability to multi-task; and have great attention to detail and problem solving skills.

Shifts will include nights and weekends. Retail experience ideal.

RJ Julia Booksellers AND Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore

Position: Event Host - Per Diem

Location: Madison, CT; Middletown, CT; Virtual/Remote

RJ Julia Booksellers accepts applications for Event Hosts on a rolling basis.

RJ Julia Booksellers is looking for an organized, responsible, creative, and dynamic problem-solver to join our talented team of Event Hosts.

Event Hosts set up and host author readings/book signings for a variety of adult and children’s events.

This position is responsible for individual event management. There are approximately 250+ events executed each year ranging from 15 to 1,000+ participants.

The hours for this position are mostly in the afternoon/evening and some weekends and will vary week to week based on the event schedule.

Responsibilities:

  • Execute events in a style that provides a unique and enjoyable customer experience – to inspire loyalty and return visits from our current customers and attract new visitors to the store;

  • Oversee all event set-up and breakdown (moving furniture, setting up folding chairs).

  • Welcome the author and guests as they arrive; introduce the author at the beginning of the event.

  • Manage the timeline of the event, oversee the book signing portion of the event.

  • Track book sales and attendance. Take photos for use on social media.

Required Qualifications:

  • Previous event management experience preferred.

  • Public speaking experience.

  • Must bring a strong work ethic!

  • An energetic, outgoing candidate will thrive in this position.

  • Must be comfortable standing for extended periods of time, lifting, and moving furniture.

  • Multi-tasking: This position includes a variety of tasks, so being able to multi-task and to prioritize tasks is very important.

  • Book Lover: Since we're in the business of books, ideal applicants will share our enthusiasm for the business. Knowledge of publishing, industry and media trends; competitors' practices and community related news and issues is helpful.
