I’ve been with the store 14 or 15 years this September (2020).
I mostly like historical fiction, but I also enjoy a good Jennifer Weiner, or something like Authenticity Project, or a beach read now and then.
My ideal reading experience is when traveling, or in my upright Queen Anne-type chair with good lighting, nibbling on sliced apples or sipping an iced chai so I won't fall asleep. Or outside on my front deck. Also, it's my favorite way to fall asleep, reading in bed, although I know it's not good for my neck!
I appreciate good passion and character development, especially in stories that span several generations. I always hope for a happy ending, but I also appreciate a more realistic conclusion, too. I really like learning something about a real person or the history of a place. Usually, authors have done a lot of research and then spiced it up, which is fine with me. Occasionally, I like a good memoir or non-fiction book, too.
My favorite all time thing about working in the bookstore is when someone comes in and asks for me and some new ideas of what I've recently liked.
I’ve worked at RJ Julia Booksellers for nearly ten years holding various positions. I started as a holiday gift wrapper for two years before becoming a bookseller and eventually, a new bookseller trainer.
I enjoy reading mostly fiction (some historical), books about family drama, disfunctional relationships, spooky tales, and stories with unreliable narrators as well as mysteries. I have been known to enjoy a romance or two.
I love a good story, good writing, and an unpredictable ending... a book I’d read until the wee hours!
Some of my favorite authors include Stephen King, Chris Bohjalian, and Mary Oliver (poetry).
I'll read anything except most horror. Having said that, I like well-written, plot-driven books, and love a good twist or new take on storytelling. Recently, I've enjoyed The Psychology of Time Travel, Nothing To See Here, Three Hours in Paris, and can't wait to share the soon-to-be released Here We Are and Her Last Flight. I like mysteries, books on writing, cookbooks (especially vegetable-centric ones) and recipe-based memoirs. I used to be a teacher, so I also love to help people find new favorites in the kids' department or help pull together titles for a gift, a new reader, or to keep up with a voracious one.
Any time and place can be an ideal reading experience, but I especially love that first hour of the day when the coffee pot has just finished brewing. And if that hour turns into two? Heaven!
I have an MFA in writing for children and a particular fondness for picture books. I recently adopted a sourdough starter and am always up for a browse through the cookbooks. I am a novice gardener and I know my way around RJ's gardening section.
